Tasmanian Hospitality Review - October/November 2023

Clubs Tasmania

Clubs Tasmania has been busy over the months of September and October running workshops and training sessions to support the community club sector and helping them remain viable and sustainable and keeping the sector informed. In partnership with Asthma Australia, we held several educational sessions around asthma and how to deal with the condition at club level. Physical activity is a major trigger for people with asthma, and sports clubs are very likely to have players with asthma so knowing what to do in an emergency will prepare your club to support your members. All clubs were invited to attend an Asthma and First Aid education session to learn about asthma and asthma first aid.

sometimes it’s too easy to get caught up in the competition element of sport and forget about why kids want to play sport- to have fun, learn new skills and connect with friends. In this workshop we discussed what’s behind the numbers of kids participating or dropping out of sport. We also took a deep dive into what it means in practice to recognise and respond to poor behaviours in sport, and how we can help prevent them in the first place. In these workshops all clubs had the opportunity to connect and collectively problem solve with a diverse range of community sport members. Everyone had the chance to share their own challenges and opportunities, and share how they will create a safer sport space where we can get back to letting kids be kids. Moving forward we are offering a series of free grant writing workshops in November, in partnership with Tasmanian Community Fund and the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR). These workshops are suitable for first time grant writers as well as those wishing to gain extra tips on how to put your best words forward when applying for funding. Finally, congratulations to the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, who were again successful at our THA Award for Excellence gala afternoon. It was the second year running the club has taken out the best RSL, Sporting, and Community Club of the Year category, with Food and Beverage Manager Jason Allie praising the entire team for their hard work and commitment. “Our journey to this achievement began in 2021 when we were awarded the title of Best Meeting and Events Venue,” Allie said. It was a remarkable moment for us and little did we know that this recognition was just the beginning of our success story. To subsequently win the titles of Best RSL and Sporting Club in 2022 and 2023 is truly a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire team at The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. “This honour means a great deal to us because it reflects the immense effort, enthusiasm, and expertise that our team consistently puts into delivering outstanding service and experiences. We take great pride in our role as a hub for the community, a thriving sporting club, and a place for camaraderie. Receiving such prestigious awards affirms that our commitment to excellence is being recognised and appreciated by our patrons and industry peers.

Clubs Tasmania also held several sponsorship sessions. These sessions were designed to understand your own brand to help engage and think commercially, with talking points including Delivering return on investment, how to best approach potential partners and what partners look for when engaging in commercial partnerships. Attendees heard the professional insights from Christine Finnegan (Jack Jumpers) and Christie Thomas (MyState Bank). We also made a visit to Flinders Island, engaging with all the clubs on the island to understand their concerns and challenges. Such direct interaction is invaluable in building a strong connection with these clubs and addressing their specific needs. Clubs Tasmania has committed to Flinders Island Clubs annually to support the community clubs in this region. Lastly Clubs Tasmania and Dr. Mary Woessner - Researcher and Lecturer from Victoria University, held workshops statewide to focus on how we as a community can let kids be kids in sport! Australia is a sporting nation and Tassie is no exception, but
