Adviser - Winter 2016

Why is post-production work important? Post-production work can retouch, recolour and generally improve the look of the final photographs. For example if you are selling a product where colour is important (such as paint) then it is vital that any advertising material matches your product colour shades exactly. I work with a specially calibrated screen so that the printed colour is as close as possible to the colours on screen. Most people don’t realise that the way that colours appear on a phone or computer is different to the way that they will be created by a printer on the page. This is why colours in photos taken on your phone may look different when they are printed out. So what do businesses need to think about when planning lifestyle photography? It’s all about projecting an image. Show the product being used and enjoyed in an aspirational situation. Don’t worry about showing every technical detail, you are selling a lifestyle. Don’t forget to have secondary shots taken which can be used in other ways, for example to use in an alternative advert. You as a business owner may be proud of a particular technical feature of your product, but actually the customer really wants to see it in action within an attractive setting. The aim is purely to get your customer to think “I want that!”.

What about budgets? It sounds obvious, but hire the best people you can afford. a professional photographic team which includes a stylist and a professional editing/retouching technician will pay for itself, both in terms of the efficient organisation of the shoot and of the finished product. Locations are another important factor; these can be sourced through location agents, budget permitting, or I can source these myself. I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting locations so if any Adviser readers have any that they’d like to rent out then get in touch! I like to be flexible and find solutions to work within client’s budgets.
