The first vehicles travelled over the Queensferry Crossing in the early hours of 30 August and by the morning rush hour it took more than an hour to clear the bridge in both directions due to the large number of drivers crossing for the first time. On the evening of 28 August, a procession of vintage, modern and electric vehicles drove across the bridge, marking the symbolic handover from contractors to the Scottish government. It was followed by a light show to celebrate the completion of the biggest infrastructure project Scotland has seen in more than twenty years. The Queensferry Crossing was closed on the weekend of 2-3 September to give around 50,000 members of the public a “once-in-a-lifetime” chance to walk over the new bridge. The bridge was officially opened by the queen on Monday 4 September, 50 years to the day after she opened the adjacent road bridge.
