off an impressive 6-5 victory over a tough East Nepean Eagles in the championship game. “We knew we have the talent, and we knew we had the team that could pull it off,” added Lockett. “We went into this tourna- ment with the mindset of, we aren’t here just to play. We are here to win.” Laurent Glaude’s son Damien is part of the winning team and was happy for the kids who battled hard throughout the tournament and earned the title of champions. “It was great to see them jump up and down and celebrate the way they did,” he said. “The players believed in themselves, and they made the plays they needed to make.” Damien, who has now been playing base- ball for three years, said it was a great feeling to win, especially against a team like East Nepean, a strong team that many considered to be the favourite. “I’m proud to have been part of this histo- ric moment in the league,” said Damien, who also plays hockey, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball and track and field. “We’ll remem- ber it for a long time. We had to work hard to beat this team. They’re the best team in our league. We had to stay focused and calm for the whole game.” The CRLL Major A Expos features players from Greely, Metcalfe, Vernon, Russell, Embrun, Casselman and Clarence-Rockland.
A group of youngsters with the Carleton Russell Little League (CRLL) just made history at one of the Ottawa area’s most prestigious tournaments earlier this month. The Little League Major Division with the CRLL, made up of 11 and 12-year-olds, became the first with the Eastern Onta- rio baseball organization to win the Scott Tokessy Memorial Golden Glove tournament, which took place from August 2 until August 4 in Kanata in Ottawa’s west end. The Scott Tokessy Memorial Gold Glove Tournament was established in 1996 in memory of Scott, a 12-year-old boy who died suddenly of an irregular heartbeat after hitting a home run for his Kanata house league team. This year marked the 27th year of the tournament and features over 50 teams that gather at the Scott Tokessy Field on Maple Grove Drive in Kanata. Proceeds raised from the tournament go directly to the CHEO Cardiology Department. “I am so proud of these kids, they overcame so many obstacles,” said the team’s head coach Todd Lockett. “This tournament features some amazing talent with some amazing teams and winning this tournament is something these kids are going to remember. It’s going to stay with them because it is very impressive.”
