CELEBRATING 50 YEARS Plans to Make This Birthday Special
Growing up, birthdays can be big occasions. As a kid, you look forward to seeing what gifts your parents and loved ones bought you and to meet your friends at Chuck E. Cheese for cardboard-flavored pizza. I don’t know what happened — it was so good when I was a kid, but when I went back with my kids, it was like they changed the recipe. But I digress. Birthdays mark important milestones in life, like when you’re 16 and can finally get your driver’s license; 21, when you can drink and gamble but end up going to Chuck E. Cheese again anyway (courtesy of my wife); or 25, when you can finally rent a car. However, once those milestones are past, it’s up to you to make birthdays fun and exciting again. This August, I am turning 50, and I want to share our plans to make this birthday special. Angel Fire Because Wendy is a principal, her time off in the summer is pretty limited. So, earlier this summer, we went to New Mexico for a 10-day trip ahead of my 50th birthday. A friend graciously lent us her condo (thank you!) in Angel Fire, and it was fantastic. Other than spending some time at Philmont Scout Reservation near Cimmaron, New Mexico, when I was a kid, I have not spent much time out there. Angel Fire, a mountain resort, is an ideal skiing destination in the winter, and a lot of fun in the summer with hiking, mountain biking, and just enjoying nature. On the first full day there, we used the ski lifts to get up to the mountain peak and take in the view. We walked the frisbee golf course and enjoyed the view. I ended up with altitude sickness, so after about 2 p.m. every day for the first five days, I was pooped! I’d sleep for several hours, wake up, we’d have dinner, then I’d go to bed again. Wendy got a lot of reading in! We also went to Red River, Taos, and Santa Fe. In Taos, we stopped at the oldest continuously habituated place in the U.S. — the Taos Pueblo. Back in Angel Fire, we went hiking and walked right up to a group of deer, thinking they’d run off as we got closer. Nope! They just stood there and watched us approach them (we didn’t get too close). If you decide to go to Angel Fire and need a place to stay, be sure to look into Mountain Spirit 215! One thing we definitely wanted to try was golf lessons. I haven’t played golf much since law school, so I’m excited to get back into it. Back then, I was a clerk for a judge in Texas, and my friends — also clerks — and I would go to this three-hole Pitch-n-Putt for lunch and play some of the worst golf anyone has ever seen. Surprisingly, a then-Texas supreme court justice and future chief justice heard that we planned to play golf.
They must have been itching to get a game in because he invited me and a couple of co-clerks to golf with us at his club. Unlike us, he was good . I will never forget being on the 16th hole, swinging my club to hit the ball, only to have the head of the club travel down range way farther than the ball ever did. Moving On Our next adventure is helping Kaitlyn move out of her apartment in Orlando. She is currently in the Disney College program and has been working at a massive shopping complex in Disney Springs (near Disney World) called World of Disney. It is the largest Disney merchandise store in the world. She managed to get a full-time job there so she could stay while finishing her last year of classes online. She is now moving on to the next phase in her life, and I look forward to seeing what comes her way.
Birthday aside, we have lots going on this month as life changes. More adventure awaits!

Tips for a Successful First Day of Class
For many, this summer has been hot, bringing many sweat-related issues that can wreak havoc on your skin-care routine. As we head into the summer’s twilight, consider adjusting your techniques with three dermatologist-approved tricks to beat the heat. Smell fresh all day. You know the tragic moment when you spritz on your favorite perfume, only to have the scent fade away before you’ve even made it out the door? A moisturizer can prevent that — specifically, an occlusive kind containing petroleum, like CeraVe or Aquaphor healing ointment. These products create a barrier on your skin, slowing the evaporation process and allowing your scent to remain fragrant longer. Free the pits. Do sweaty or dark-colored armpits keep you from raising your arms too much during the summer? Thanks to glycolic acid wipes, it’s time to throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care. Regularly using face or body pads containing BHA Dermatologist-Approved Hacks to Stay Cool BANISH SUMMER BEAUTY MELTDOWNS!
With summer break tragically ending (as it does, sadly, every year), it is time to get back in the groove and prepare for the new school year. If you want to get over the first-day jitters and start out strong, employ these tips to make your first day back at class so successful that others will want to study it. Getting a Head Start According to research by the Center for Economic Security and Opportunity, students lose as much as 25%–30% of the knowledge they accumulated the previous school year over summer break. Reading and math skills are particularly affected and see the highest regression rate. And the higher your grade level, the more you are likely to forget. The best way to combat this summer slump is to keep learning. Try reading books and practicing arithmetic at least three times a week to ensure you can maintain what you have previously worked so hard to learn. Shopping Spree You also want to come to school prepared! Shopping for school supplies is a great way to get everything you need for the year ahead, including a snazzy new outfit for the first day, notebooks, organizers, and favorite brands of pens and pencils. It’s also important to write your names in your notebooks to make
them easier to identify if they end up in the lost and found!
Mental Map No one likes getting lost. Whether returning to the same school as last year or heading into a new environment, finding your way can be daunting. If you arrive at school early, you can figure out where
(beta-hydroxy acid) or AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) on your underarms can quickly refresh between showers and reap some top-notch benefits. These naturally occurring acids exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, heal sun damage, and help to lighten dark spots. Additionally, AHA and BHA can keep body odor away no matter how hot it gets.
Say bye-bye to makeup stains. As the adage goes, you can’t wear white after Labor Day — which makes summer the ideal season to strut your stuff in all your best achromatic outfits. Before you get dressed, take this simple precaution to prevent makeup and tinted SPF from smudging all over the collars of your crisp, clean shirts. The hack? A little hairspray on your clothing prevents smudging by leaving a thin film, creating a barrier between your makeup and the fabric. It might be the hottest time of the year — but that doesn’t mean you need to accept a total beauty meltdown. By incorporating these simple hacks into your daily summer routine, you’ll keep your cool in style for the rest of the season.
each class is and plot your path beforehand. Getting a feel for where you need to go
throughout the day can be a great way to help you feel more prepared and comfortable. Many schools also have physical maps, which can be a great resource to store in your backpack if you ever find yourself turned around.

Here are four scavenger hunt ideas you can adapt for your home. Back to School If you want to get your kids in the mood to return to class, why not introduce the idea via an interactive, school-related scavenger hunt? You can have them find their new backpack and notebooks, pens, pencils, and other classroom supplies you have ready for them. Flashlight Finder For this scavenger hunt, turn out the lights and grab your flashlights! While searching for something in the dark may sound like the setup for a horror movie, it’s not! It can be a lot of fun when it’s part of a curated scavenger hunt. Best of all, this scavenger hunt can be done outside or inside. Hide easily recognizable items and get the family searching. Identifying Insects If you have a backyard or a park nearby, likely many bugs are out there waiting to be identified. Take a walk for yourself and see what Tasty Cucumber Sushi Rolls
creatures you can find. Bees, ladybugs, and ants are a great start. Depending on your area, you can even add some rarer bugs to the list! This is also a great way to teach your kids which bugs are friendly and which they should avoid. Just be sure to create a way for seekers to document their finds without hurting the insects, like using a phone camera.
Art Exhibit Want to get your kids more interested in the works of famous painters and sculptors? Print some pictures of their works on display at a local museum and compile them into a scavenger hunt sheet. At the museum,
have your kids match the works with their respective artists and genres, allowing them to better understand the wonderful world of art! Encourage them to take note of other artwork they like or recognize!

Eyeing Up Potatoes’ Vital Role in Health
Why Potatoes Deserve a Place on Your Plate Are potatoes good for your health? Misconceptions abound about the humble spud, one of the most widely eaten foods in the world (third most popular, behind rice and wheat). So, why is this mighty tuber such a controversial topic — especially when the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato? SPUD STATS!
Full of Gut-Friendly Fiber Starches, often found in grains or potatoes, are long chains of glucose, and different types react in various ways in your body. Resistant starch, which potatoes contain, functions as a soluble fiber, which provides a range of benefits, including improved gut and insulin health, decreased blood sugar levels, and a whole host of other advantages that aid digestion. In other words, potatoes help keep you regular.
It’s time to praise the tater and recognize it as a budget-friendly and versatile nutrition powerhouse! Still unconvinced? Let’s look at some spud stats that might make you reconsider turning down those fries at second breakfast. Packed With Vitamin C Did you know that one medium-sized baked potato has about 17 milligrams of vitamin C, roughly 35% of the recommended intake for a healthy adult? Between the 16th and 19th centuries, also known as the Age of Sail, potatoes were a vital ration for travelers at sea because vitamin C is essential for preventing scurvy. More Potassium Than a Banana A single medium-size russet potato has a whopping 610 milligrams of potassium, approximately 40% more than a banana. That’s great for nutrition, as this mineral is vital for many bodily functions. Not getting enough can cause problems for your nervous system, muscles, and heart.
Potatoes are more than a staple food and deserve more nutritional credit. With their high vitamin C, potassium, and fiber content, these
budget-friendly and versatile sources of essential nutrition belong in any balanced diet. Just remember not to go overboard on the butter or cheese, and you can enjoy your spuds knowing you’re fueling your body well.
