Tom Tilton, PT, DPT, SFMA, USAW, Director of Athletic Performance Congratulations to Dr. Tom Tilton who has recently been appointed Director of Athletic Performance for the Professional Care PCAP Division! Dr. Thomas Tilton, an athlete and science enthusiast, grew up in Islip, New York and graduated from Islip High School. From there he would go on to attend Sacred Heart University, where he played football while earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science. As an undersized

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPL I NT I NG BY A CERT I F I ED HAND THERAP I ST His clinical interests include the shoulder girdle, low back, knees and sports-related injuries including return-to-play protocols. Outside of physical therapy, Dr. Tilton coaches Varsity football at Islip High School and serves as the high school’s Strength and Conditioning Coach. Dr. Tilton also actively participates as a volunteer at Islip Little League. He currently holds certification from USA weightlifting and SFMA. Custom splinting, while it is a challenging skill to master, is something that we are proud to say we offer here at ProCare. A splint, also known as orthosis, is a piece of medical equipment that is used as a way to keep an injured body part immobile during the healing process, in order to protect it from further damage. An orthosis may be defined as “static,” meaning they prevent motion altogether, or “dynamic,” meaning they allow for functional, controlled motions. Through the advanced training and skills of our Occupational Therapist/Certified Hand Therapist Amanda Loevner, we are able to offer custom splinting in-house, which is something that many rehabilitation clinics simply are not able to offer. Some common conditions that may require splinting of the upper extremities include, but are not limited to: freshman athlete, Dr. Tilton found the value of hard work through a strong strength and conditioning program and it would be then when Dr. Tilton would discover his true passion of helping others achieve their athletic goal potential. Dr. Tilton then went on to attend Sacred Heart University’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program, where he graduated in 2013 with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. While at Sacred Heart, Tom was selected to perform his clinical affiliation with the San Francisco Giants. Throughout this clinical, he received extensive training in working with sports-related injuries with multiple Major League Baseball players under the instruction of San Francisco Giants’ head physical therapist, Tony Reale. Among Dr. Tilton’s other clinical experience, he was selected to participate in a clinical at the renowned NYU Cardiac Rehab Center and St. Charles’ Hospital’s Orthopedic Rehab floor. As a therapist, Dr. Tilton emphasizes the research and use of the latest evidence-based practice in conjunction with manual therapy to help his patients achieve their goals.

You may be wondering, “Why is custom splinting so important?” According to the American Family Physician , “splinting is the preferred method of immobilization in the acute care setting,” because splints are faster and easier to apply. They also state that splints allow for the “natural swelling that occurs during the initial inflammatory phase of the injury.” This helps the affected area heal quicker and regain function more effectively than a cast might. “Tearing my ACL was a huge set back to my hockey career and that is why I chose Professional Care PT. They have worked with my sister on countless injuries and have always done an amazing job. At the young age of three years old, Thomas Finck began to show his love for ice hockey and it wasn’t long before he would begin playing in competitive-travel games at the age of 5. In September of 2018, a forward for the British Columbia Hockey League, Tom suffered an ACL tear and became a patient of Professional Care Physical Therapy after his repair surgery which was performed by Dr. Joshua Dines, an Orthopedic Surgeon who specializes in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery. Tom has worked incredibly hard at his recovery and we are proud to say that in just 6 short months not only is Tom fully participating in our Professional Care Athletic and Performance (PCAP) Division, but he has made his way back to the ice and has been recently drafted in the 2019 USPHL NCDC junior league draft!
