Delhi

Set deep in the heart of Norfolk County lies the small town of Delhi, Ontario. Founded by Frederick Sover - een it has been known as Sovereen’s Corners, Fredericksburg, and finally in 1880 was named Delhi, probably by a postmaster in honour of Delhi, India. The history includes lumbering prior to 1880, then fruits and vegetables. Tobacco always did well from 1900 up to the 1980’s in the sandy soil and long warm summer days. Tobacco farming was a labour-inten - sive crop and brought hundreds of people to work in the summers and then more so at harvest time. You can step into the past at the Delhi Tobac - co Museum and Heritage Centre with captivating exhibits. The museum is beside Delhi Quance Park which is the original location of the Quance Lum - ber Mill. The site is a beautiful place to take a walk alongside Big Creek.

Delhi also has Memorial Park featuring a beautiful pavilion and a war memorial. The history of the area is clearly hard-working European farmers with landmarks like the Delhi District Hun - garian Hall, the Delhi District German Home, and the Delhi Polish Club. Until recently, there was also a Belgian Hall. Today, Delhi is home to farm-to-mar - ket stores, restaurants, boutiques, along with all the major retailers you would expect from hardware to groceries to pharmacies. There are a number of new shops mixed with longstanding businesses along The Main Street of Delhi. Take a walk down the street and enjoy some treats.
