After 5 Years on My Back A Full Recovery in 2 Months
I was on my back for five years before my amputation. I fought a bone infection in my lower left leg off and on during those years. I just couldn’t get away from it. I would go into the hospital for a surgery, the doctors would fix up my leg the best they could, and then, inevitably, the infection would come back within a few months. Finally, after five years of that vicious cycle, we decided the best thing would be an amputation. The below knee amputation happened back in November. I was up and walking around by January like I hadn’t in years. Part of that was because I didn’t have to deal with the infection anymore. More so, it was because of all the wonderful people who made sure I made a full recovery. That’s not to say the recovery process was easy, but between the combined efforts of Dr. Jonathon Wolf (my physician), the staff at Advanced Prosthetics & Orthotics, and myself, I was up and walking in just two months. Now, I don’t know what the average time for a full recovery is from an amputation, but my recovery period felt like no time at all! I am a firm believer in the idea that a person should develop themselves to their fullest potential. I don’t know why anyone would ever want anything less. Because of my speedy recovery, I’ve been able to get back to some of the things I love doing. Last month, I received a call about a job mowing someone’s field. It was the first job of that sort I’ve been able to take in a very long time. Even though I’m still getting used to my prosthesis, I never would have been able to get back to work if I hadn’t had my lower left leg amputated and trusted my doctors and the CPOs at Advanced Prosthetics & Orthotics with my recovery.
In short, they all turned my life around in
ways that wouldn’t have been possible without their help. I’m
excited for the opportunities I’ve had since I have recovered from the surgery, whether those
opportunities mean work or just a greater freedom to move around where I want and when I want. I’m just so incredibly grateful for my CPO Brittany Tilden, the staff at APO, Dr. Wolf, and everyone else who has helped me get my life back. If anyone is looking for a prosthetic provider here in the Treasure Valley, I can’t recommend Advanced Prosthetics & Orthotics highly enough.

THE BEST BOOKS TO PICK UP RIGHT NOW
When you read the news, it might seem like none of the problems plaguing our country and our world have any resolution in sight. That’s why there’s no better time to pick up an exciting novel. Though the characters in any story worth reading face hardship and conflict, we can find solace knowing that by the time you get to the last page, they’ll be resolved. So, if you want to disappear into a world inhabited by relatable characters and exciting conflicts, here are a few top- selling novel recommendations. When You Need Something Other Than Netflix and the News
DEAL WITH YOUR
Coping Strategies vs. Coping Mechanisms EMOTIONS IN A HEALTHIER WAY
‘Where the Crawdad Sings’ — Delia Owens
This book has been on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly 100 weeks, so you know it has to be good. It’s a story about the “Marsh Girl” who dwells near the fictional town of Barkley Cove, North Carolina. While contemplating leaving her hermit lifestyle, she is suspected of murdering a local townsman. Much like the marshes of North Carolina, this mystery will swallow you up.
‘Little Fires Everywhere’ — Celeste Ng
What do you do when you feel anxious, sad, or stressed? Do you reach for your phone to scroll through Instagram? Do you turn to a Snickers bar for comfort? Maybe an episode of “Parks and Recreation” is your go-to form of relief. If you use any of these methods, you’re not alone. When humans face difficult situations, they often turn to coping mechanisms to numb emotions and help themselves feel better in the moment. Emotional development expert Alyssa Blask Campbell identifies many common coping mechanisms, including engaging in screen time, making to-do lists, seeking information, indulging in alcohol or cigarettes, and asserting control where possible. Coping mechanisms make you feel better in the moment, but they don’t always help process and deal with emotions in the long run.
What happens when you’re so sure of your plans, only to have them completely disrupted by something you never saw coming? That’s the crux of ‘Little Fires Everywhere,’ a story about two mothers — one an ardent rule follower and the other a disruptor of the status quo — who find themselves on opposite sides of a custody battle for a Chinese-American baby. While the book will no doubt keep you glued to your seat, you can also catch the show of the same name streaming on Hulu!
‘The Guardians’ — John Grisham
If you love courtroom dramas on the screen or on the page, then you’ve probably read at least one of John Grisham’s books. This is one of his most recent, which follows Cullen Post, a lawyer and Episcopal minister who fights to exonerate a man wrongly imprisoned for murder for two decades, but not without ruffling the feathers of some very powerful people who would like for Post’s client to stay in prison. When you’re looking for something less real than the news but also less mind numbing than Netflix, a good book might hit the sweet spot. Why not try one of these?
Coping Strategies vs. Mechanisms
Turning to coping mechanisms is a habit you may have learned as a kid. It’s understandable, and it’s okay. But instead, you want to focus on coping strategies that help you work through challenging emotions and find calm again. Coping strategies are things like breathing exercises, talk therapy, journaling, reading, and physical movement like dancing. While these may take more time to yield results than a TV program or candy bar, tapping into these strategies helps you feel better and process what you’re going through, which allows you to release whatever is causing you strife. Because the way you react when your emotions overwhelm you has an impact on the way you feel during and after that experience, it’s all the more important to understand the different coping tools at your disposal. As you learn to incorporate coping strategies into your life and call on them when you’re dealing with hard emotions, give yourself grace. You can still turn to healthy coping mechanisms when you need them. The key is to also incorporate some of these strategies to help you better process whatever comes your way.

How to Prevent Infections
IN YOUR RESIDUAL LIMB
Apply lotion if necessary.
While you’re still in the hospital following an amputation, doctors and health care professionals will be responsible for keeping
Dryness and irritability can cause the skin to crack and become infected. If you have dry skin, ask your doctor to recommend a nonalcoholic, unscented lotion. Make sure you use only enough lotion to remedy dry or flaky skin — while you want to avoid dry skin, you also want to avoid subjecting your wound to excessive moisture. That’s also why the best time to apply lotion to your residual limb is right before you go to bed. Don’t apply lotion immediately before donning your prosthesis.
your wound clean and safe from infection. When you go home, however, that responsibility shifts to you. Even though
infections can occur on residual limbs despite our best efforts, the best defense against an infection is preventing it from happening in the first place.
Make sure your prosthesis fits well.
Wash daily with soap and water.
An ill-fitting prosthesis can cause redness, swelling, and skin breakdown which can lead to an infection. Make sure your prosthesis fits comfortably on your residual limb, and if it doesn’t, call us to schedule an adjustment.
The most important step you can take to prevent an infection from forming in your residual limb is to wash it at least once a day with mild, unscented soap and water. If you sweat a lot, you might want to wash it twice a day. You should also wash anything that touches your residual limb with soap and water on a daily basis, such as a liner, sock, or the socket of the prosthesis.

STUCK INSIDE? 3 Activities to Keep You Busy
Plan Your Next Vacation
Summertime means getting out of the house to enjoy the sunshine and the bright blue sky. But even during this great time of year, you may
Spending the day inside might just be the perfect time to plan your next vacation. Use this time to calculate the expenses of the trip, such as travel, board, food, and souvenirs. You can also research and figure out where you’re going to stay ahead of time, whether that be a hotel or an Airbnb, to optimize your experience. Once you have the groundwork done, you’ll have a better idea of how your trip will go and be able to focus on the fun stuff when the time comes!
have to spend some of these precious days inside, not outside. Rather than scrolling through social media or reminiscing about better days, here are a few ideas you can use to turn a day spent indoors into a fun summer memory!
Change It Up
Get Crafty
If you’ve been putting off rearranging or reorganizing a room in your house, then a day at home is a great chance to get started. Switching up the layout of your stuff gives your home a fresh new look and provides you with an opportunity to deep-clean your space. If you have a patio or porch, then try sprucing up those outdoor spaces with new furniture, potted plants, or trendy decor. Just imagine how satisfying it will feel once everything is in a new place and sparkling clean. Even when you’d rather be outside enjoying the last days of summer, these indoor activities will keep you entertained and give you something fun to look forward to!
You’re bound to have a few materials floating around the house that you can use to
create a new art project or even start a new hobby. If you have extra sheets of paper lying around, then give origami a go. Do you have a shirt you don’t wear anymore but still love? Turn it into a new pillow cover or a bag. You can also create fun garden decorations by painting rocks, making a wind chime, or repurposing an old boot into a new plant holder. You never know — whatever you choose to do could become your next passion.
