Could Permanent Alimony End This Year? There is another effort to reform Florida’s alimony law that is picking up momentum. For a number of years, there’s been a push to end permanent alimony in the state of Florida, but this year, it might actually be made into law. Permanent alimony involves indefinite payments and typically does not end until the recipient spouse remarries or one of the spouses dies. While alimony can be modified upon retirement, this usually requires the filing of a modification action, which can be costly and time consuming. can seek to lower or end their alimony payments. While this is part of the initial proposal, this could change as the alimony bill progresses. While the bill is seen as more favorable this year than in previous efforts, there is still

a controversial provision. The proposed bill includes a presumption that both parents will share time equally for child custody purposes. Under current Florida law, a judge will evaluate 17-20 factors to determine child custody. These would still remain with the new provision but would come after the 50-50 presumption. The sponsor of the bill, state Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka stated that the goal of the bill is “To ensure that this leads to a better system that provides predictability, that provides certainty and fairness.” If the bill is passed, the legislation would go into effect in July.

The state is seeking to replace permanent alimony with a formula based on the length of the marriage that would ideally make things fairer. If the marriage lasted for less than three years, there would be no alimony. If it was between three and 10 years, alimony would last for 50% of the marriage. If the marriage lasted for more than 10 years but less than 20, alimony would last for 60% of the marriage and if the marriage lasted more than 20 years, alimony would remain for 75% of the marriage length. 2 lbs ground beef 2 tbsp chili powder

1 tsp ground cumin

2 16-oz cans diced tomatoes 2 16-oz cans small red beans 2 8-oz cans tomato sauce

1 tbsp Creole seasoning

DIRECTIONS

1. In a deep pot, brown the beef, stirring often. 2. Once beef is cooked, add chili powder, Creole seasoning, and cumin, cooking for 1 minute. 3. Stir in diced tomatoes, beans, and tomato sauce and bring the mixture to a boil. 4. After the mixture boils, reduce the heat to low and let chili simmer for 15 minutes. 5. Serve with toppings of choice, like cheese, sour cream, or chives.
