flam e that is not unquenchable; fo r a fire that is not an everlasting fire.” A fter uttering these words, stretching his hands above his head, he gazed up ward, and in aw ful agony cried out, “Oh. thou m erciful but blasphemed ana in sulted God, hell itself is a refu g e i f it would only hide me from thy frown.” Then, in a moment he fe ll back on his pillow, and died. What a mute testimony. To what are you clinging as your refuge fo r this life, as well as fo r the life to come? The Lord Jesu s Christ rightly declared, “I am the resurrection, and the life : he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liv e: And who soever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” A TEST OF FAITH Some years ago, the Rev. J . M. Zook made a missionary tour o f the Orient. He had a native evangelist with him who interpreted his sermons. One night, as usual, a closing invitation was given. While several persons came forw ard the missionary noticed a group o f young people in the rea r o f the building. Three o f them finally headed down the aisle and knelt fo r prayer. Mr. Zook went to his knees with them. While he was praying one o f them reached over and landed a stinging slap on the side o f his face. The stunned missionary stopped momentarily not knowing what to do or say. Instinctively he remembered the B iblical injunction to turn the other side o f his face. As he did, the offender was caught off guard. Em barrassed, he again bowed in prayer. When Rev. Zook had led the trio to a saving • knowledge o f the Lord, one o f them umnted to speak. He said that the group w ere students who had been studying the Bible. When they came to the verse giving the Lord’s admonition to His disciples to turn the other cheek when they had been hit by someone they decided to see i f it really worked on Christians. They made up their minds that i f the m inister from a fa r country did as the B ible stated, then that would be their p roof that they should accept Christianity. How the Holy Spirit had been working in their hearts. It may not be that someone will physically hit you on the side o f the face, but you may be slammed and maligned by others, even by those from whom you would least suspect it. The B ible says fo r us to endure hardness as good sol diers o f Jesu s Christ. L et us be living epistles known and read o f all men.
JUDSON'S CONVERSION Although he was the son o f an out standing Christian minister, Adoniram Judson, during his days at Brown Uni versity, chose as his best frien d the prod uct o f new thought. His companion was an ardent atheist and infidel. As a re sult, Judson became as strong a scoff er and unbeliever as his friend. Strange ly enough, the preacher’s son had de cided on a stage career. Following graduation Adoniram Judson joined a theatrical party. Sometime later the group were perform ing ju st outside o f New Y ork City in a country inn. R etir ing fo r the night, Judson was disturbed because his room was next to that o f a man who, by the sounds o f his agonized groaning, was on his death bed. When Judson inquired the next morning he was told that the man had indeed passed away. This wasn’t what stunned him, however, fo r he was casually told the name o f the poor unfortunate. As strange a coincidence as it may seem, the man turned out to be none other than his infidel college chum. Overwhelmed with the futility o f a life without God he quickly returned to his room where he surrendered him self to Christ. That was the start o f his spiritual life. As a re sult he became a firebrand fo r Christ in reaching lost pagans on the mission field with the Gospel. Whatever your situa tion is today rem ember that life with out Christ is a hopeless end, but,, on the other hand, life with Christ is an endless hope. TRUE TRUST D. L. Moody rightly said, “Trust in you rself and you’re doomed to disap pointment. Trust in your frien ds and they will die and leave you. Trust in money and you may have it taken from you. Trust in reputation and some slanderous tongue may blast it. But trust in God and you’re never to be confounded in time or eternity. A REAL VOLUNTEER A one - legged school teacher from Scotland came to J . Hudson Taylor o f fering him self fo r service in China. The great man o f God replied to him kindly, “Why do you, with only one leg, con sider going as a missionary?" The earn est Scotsman replied solemnly, "Mr. Taylor, it’s because I don’t see those going with two legs and so I must.” 23
