OCTOBER 20-25TH IS NATIONAL TEEN DRIVER SAFETY WEEK This fall, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s NHTSA, in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is promoting National Teen Driver Safety Week. This initiative encourages parents and guardians to engage in ongoing conversations about safe driving habits with their teens. Traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for 15-20-year-olds, although fatalities decreased by 5% from 2021 to 2022. (continued on next page)

Talk to your teens about the rules of the road and the privilege to drive

With male teen drivers at higher risk, it’s crucial for parents to model safe behaviors and discuss potential dangers, including impaired driving, seat belt use, distracted driving, speeding, and passenger restrictions. Key Tips for Parents: Impaired Driving : Remind teens that alcohol and drugs can impair their ability to drive safely. Safe driving leads to continued driving privileges. Seat Belt Safety : Ensure all passengers buckle up—unbelted teens are at a significantly higher risk in crashes. Distracted Driving : Emphasize the dangers of phone use while driving. Any distraction can lead to deadly consequences. Speed Limits : Discuss the importance of adhering to speed limits, especially in changing conditions. Passengers : Be aware of state restrictions on teen passengers, as more passengers can lead to riskier behaviors. Engaging in these conversations not only reinforces safe driving habits but also strengthens the parent-teen relationship.
