Kenya Kenya spans a total area of approximately 600,000 square kilometres with a population of nearly 44 million people. It is made up of 47 counties and its capital is Nairobi. Prior to independence in 1963, Kenya was a British colony with its own legislative assembly. It is now a sovereign republic with a multi-party democracy. Kenya’s common law-based legal system is partially inherited from its British colonial past. It also blends in Customary and Islamic Law in respect of familial issues.
