South Africa The Republic of South Africa’s economy is one of the most developed in Africa, and is rich in natural resources such as coal, gold, and iron, among other natural resources. In particular, the oil and gas sectors have attracted international investors. South Africa has 55.6 million people across nine provinces. South Africa is a constitutional democracy in the form of a parliamentary republic. South Africa has a ‘hybrid’ legal system shaped by the intertwining of different legal traditions. It inherited a common law legal system from the Dutch (Roman Dutch), legal principles from the English and customary law from the indigenous population. South Africa has a constitution (Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996), incorporating the Bill of Rights, which applies to all parts of the law and guides the development of the legal system.
