Tanzania The United Republic of Tanzania is a union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The combined population is the largest in East Africa at 50 million. There are two governments within the union: the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. The former government represents Tanzania at the international stage and presides over all of the affairs of Tanganyika and certain affairs of Zanzibar. The latter government presides over affairs that only relate to Zanzibar. As a result, there are separate legal systems in the country with various diverging laws.
