Dear President Wohlpart, The Faculty Senate has concluded its vote on whether to endorse your plan to rewrite the Code using a group of 3 faculty and 3 administrators. As promised in last week’s email, we are notifying you of the result. The response was overwhelmingly negative, with 90% of the votes opposed and many of the comments expressing strong alarm. Consequently, the Faculty Senate will not be able to endorse the plan. Given the strength of the opposition, we urge you to reconsider the plan and invite you to collaborate with FSEC in working through existing channels to update the Faculty Code. Our Bylaws and Faculty Code Committee (BFCC) has reviewed the Code and produced a detailed report with recommended modifications. We believe reviewing the attached report and working together to revise the Faculty Code could yield a fruitful partnership that strengthens shared governance and begins to restore trust within the university community. We heard you express in Friday’s open forum that the board has given you unambiguous directives to rewrite the Faculty Code using a group of 3 faculty and 3 administrators. We are not sure how this is possible given RCW 42.30 (Open Public Meetings Act) and the fact that the Board never approved this specific charge in a public, open meeting. Nevertheless, it appears that you are under significant pressure from the Board in this area. We are attaching the survey results and urge you to show them to the Board to help them understand the possible consequences of pushing through such a highly-opposed initiative. We also encourage you to share with the Board our invitation to collaboratively refine the Faculty Code using existing channels. Please let us know if there are other ways we can help.
