“ I T l ik e to talk to a coun- 1L selor,” said a young man as.he came into the inquiry room. He had come in response to an invitation by an evangelistic speaker. Why is the term counselor present ly used in evangelism? Twenty years ago it was rarely, if ever, used to describe a worker who assisted those who came to a prayer or inquiry room. These workers were called per sonal workers, altar workers, prayer leaders, or by some other title. Counselor is a good word to de scribe a good method as well as a good worker who uses a good method. He is a trained worker. He uses the methods that are most helpful to a person who needs spiritual help with personal problems, or who needs skill ful assistance in meeting his prob lems. A counselor works with one per son; it is a personal interview. Not all persons who come to a counseling room for spiritual help have the same problems. Mary came to the counseling room to find Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour. She had a church and Sun day school background. She h a d studied the Bible. She had been reared in a Christian home. Jim’s background was quite different. He was not sure what his need really was. His parents did not attend a church and he was a spiritual illiter ate. But he was sure that he had a real spiritual need. A counselor could discover the problems and background of each and give help that applied in each case. To be sure, both needed to come to Christ to have their sins forgiven and find new life in Him. It was possible for the counselor to present the particular help from God’s Word. Personal evangelism requires the very best in training and dedication that a personal counselor can give. The use of God’s Word and the lead ing of the Holy Spirit are essential. God also blesses the abilities and methods of the counselor. No one by his own ability can bring a person to Christ and change a life for this is the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit-filled, skillful counselor can be greatly used of God to bring persons to Him. We are His workmen, His counselors. THE KING'S BUSINESS w o u l d
