10 MINUTES TO BIOLA

A T KNOTT'S BERRY FARM EgfigB W e *

by Nelson S. Dilworth California State Senator, Retired G o d ’ s t w o g r e a t e s t gifts to Ameri ca both arrived in February. When God wants to bestow something special upon a nation or a people, He sends a baby. Washington and Lin coln were the February “ babies.” Abraham Lincoln could have grown up illiterate. Almost anyone else born in his circumstances never would have learned to write his name. But God arranged that someone gave little Abe a copy of the Holy Bible. May they be forever blessed of God for this act. For many boyhood years, this was little Abe’s only book. In youth, he once walked more than twenty-five miles to borrow a bio graphy of George Washington. Lin coln laboriously learned to read both it and his Bible and made their prin ciples his own. He went on to become as great a man as Washington whose childhood instruction also had been Biblical. Such is the power of books, especially the Book of books! By his sheer unconquerable cour-, age, Lincoln educated himself in law. Repeatedly defeated in elections, he continued to strive for his principles. Lincoln’s life was deeply marked by two great sorrows, the untimely death of Anne Rutledge, the sweetheart of his young manhood, and the death of his beloved son, Tad. In all of Lin coln’s life, Tad was the only person who seemed to understand him com pletely. But circumstances did not alter Lin coln. His faith and courage came from God’s Word faithfully studied and hidden in his heart. When some lesser soul challenged the necessity of free dom, it is of record that Lincoln re plied: “ Christ taught it, and Christ is God.” In Washington and Lincoln we have the architects of our nation, men whose very language and style of ex pression are derived from the Bible. If today youth would be great and courageous and wise, their key to suc cess will be thorough knowledge and acceptance of the Bible. God gays in His Word, “ For them that honour me I will honour” (I Samuel 2:30)
