and His religion, as He left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is like to see . . . I have . . . some doubts as to His Divinity, though it is a question I do not dogmatize upon . . . I see no harm, however, in its being believed' . . .” While it is ob vious that Franklin did not wholly accept the Deity of Christ, it is clear that he did believe in the Genesis ac count of creation, which is contrary to the Rosicrucian emphasis upon evo lution. It may be argued that Frank lin died before Darwin was born, but we should keep in mind that in the days of the Greeks, during the Middle Ages, and extending to arid beyond Franklin’s time, many theories of evolution were taught, all of which sought to replace God as originator of life and the material world. Dar win was not the only one who made blasphemous, unbelieving “ guesses” ! (3) The Rosicrucians claim they are not -a religion, but only a frater nal order, but while it is true that their set-up does resemble a lodge, a study of their authorities, particular ly the books of Max Heindel, reveal that undeniably it is a religion, deal ing mainly with “ visible and invisible worlds.” It traces its origin to “one of the mystery schools of secret wis dom in ancient Egypt,” with Pharaoh Amenhotep IV the founder in 1350 B.C. Christian Rosenkreuz (hence “ rose cross” ) organized the system in the 17th century and it is a combina tion of Oriental occultism and mysti cism, mental healing, reincarnation, b i r t h cycles, astrology, pyramid teaching, etc., topped with the mod em evolutionary hypothesis. It con tains no Gospel light but is full of darkness and confusion.

O u r a t t e n t i o n has been called to advertisements in local publica tions by the Rosicrucians in which the picture of Benjamin Franklin ap pears with the claim that he was a member of this cult. This has led to three inquiries: (1) Was Franklin really a Rosicrucian? (2) What was his religious belief? (3) Who are the Rosicrucians? (1) I cannot find any proof of this in either the writings of Franklin, or about him, so I wrote AMORC (An cient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis) at their San José headquarters for such evidence, but to date it has not been forthcoming. The Americana (vol. 12, p. 11, ’37) states categorically: “ Franklin was not a member of the visible church, nor did he ever be come the adherent of any sect.” (2) In his 84th and last year (1790), Franklin w r o t e President Styles of Yale as follows: “ Here is my creed. I believe in one God, the creator of the universe. That He gov erns it by His providence. That He ought to be worshipped. That the most acceptable service we can render to Him is doing good to His other chil dren. That the soul of man is im -. mortal and will be treated with jus tice in another life respecting its con duct in this . . . As to Jesus of Naza reth .
