B Y A L T H E A S . M I L L E R “ T T h is r e d c o a t doesn’t go with JL these trousers. I don’t want to wear it.” “Yes it does, Mark. That shade of red looks nice with gray.” “Well, Mother,” by this time the little fellow’s voice hinted of exasper ation, “ it doesn’t go with turquoise.” “ How did turquoise get into the picture?” “ I don’t know, but do I have to wear this coat to Sunday School today?” Without waiting for an answer, the nine-year-old left Mother to dis cuss his problem with other members of the household. He was determined to find an ally. Apparently nobody else was aware of the issue at stake. Nobody knew that Mark was going all out to prove Mother wrong. As a court of final appeal, the little fellow went to Gram. To his amaze ment, she concurred with the family. With drooping shoulders, M a r k trudged his weary way back to Mother’s bedroom. Although the de feat of his will reached out to envelop his entire frame, the youngest mem ber of the clan admitted, “ Everybody agrees with you, Mother. Even Gram says the red coat looks nice with the trousers. So I guess I’ll wear them.” Then as he turned to leave the room, Mother heard him mutter half to him self, “ I didn’t get very far on that deal.” Mother shook with laughter after her son was out of earshot. In spite of the fact that he had tried to line up the family against her, Mother found herself admiring the little schemer— not for his rebellion or craftiness—but for his honesty in the face of defeat. He knew when he was beaten and admitted it. “Isn’t it time we Christains quit trying to make ‘deals’ with God?” Mother asked herself. The hour hand on Time’s clock insists that we face and admit defeat to God. Then fellowship with God will be restored and we shall experience power to do His will with joy. ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ (I John 1:9).”
