PASTORAL CARE Julius House
rewarding year in Julius House. As usual, we started with a very busy first term, where we welcomed 14 new Year 9 students into Julius. These fine young men were able to settle into both House and College life well, and it was wonderful to see them becoming engaged in our House activities so positively. The highlight of Term 1 came in the form of a fantastic performance at the interhouse swimming sports. Unfortunately because of Covid-19 restrictions, we were denied an opportunity to run our full House relays, where Julius House would have been extremely confident of victory. As Term 1 came to an end, we farewelled Nikki Bleyendaal from her role as Deputy Housemaster, following her appointment as Head of Teaching and Learning – English & Humanities in the Centre for Teaching Excellence & Research. Thankfully, we were able to retain Nikki as a mentor in the house. In her place, Dr Neil de Joux was
appointed as the new Deputy Housemaster, and would move over from Somes House at the beginning of Term 2. A significant portion of Term 2 was dedicated to preparation for the House Music competition, where the boys were working on a rendition of Help! by The Beatles. Slowly but surely the House went from singing in monotone quietly to singing in monotone loudly. A final push over the last two weeks, particularly led by Year 13s Hanjun Kim, Monty Rookes and Gus McQuarrie, resulted in a song delivered with passion that was anything but monotone. The enthusiasm and togetherness shown by the House on the night was clear for all to see, and the boys were deserved winners of the Carey Shield for Best House Choir. Unfortunately, midway through Term 2 Dr Mike Field was required to take a significant amount of time off because of issues associated with concussion. Dr Neil de Joux took on
