He won New Zealand titles at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships and New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Cross- country. Armani Lemalu won a myriad of titles and set records across athletic events at the College championships, Canterbury club championships, Canterbury Secondary Schools’ and South Island Secondary Schools’ championships. Harry Trolove and Henry Lassen had a great shooting season with success through the South Island Open Skeet Championships, the Marlborough/Nelson Provincial Championships and through the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ teams competition. Their selection for New Zealand under-18 skeet shooting team honours exemplified their season this year. At the major Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Sport Awards, Liam Alexander won the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Zonta Award for Excellence in two sports across 2021 with his achievements in rowing and hockey. Hoani Ifopo-Togia and Louis McKeon were part of the under-13 Red Canterbury basketball team that won the title at the Southern Regional Championships, and James Luxon was successful in his grading for a black belt in first degree black belt in Shao Chi Chuan (Kung-Fu).
Jacob Clements was selected in the wider New Zealand water polo squad to prepare for the 2022 FINA World Junior championships,
champion for his age group for five consecutive years, and has collected more than 10 College swimming records. James was supported by Alex Johnston, Matthew Flint, Callum Gard, George Grace, Finlay Sharpe, Sam Chittock, James Drury, Jacob Clements, and Jack Coles. Following swimming, we again competed well through the Athletics Sports, gaining 2nd in the overall championship, 2nd in the field championship and 3rd in the relay championship. This was the result of a whole House effort and the large number of athletes who had reached finals in a wide range of events. However, Armani Lemalu had an outstanding competition and broke two College records, while Jack Belcher was 2nd equal in the overall senior championship. We had 1st places in events by Jack Belcher (senior 100m hurdles and senior long jump), Armani Lemalu (junior discus and junior shot put), Jayden Sa (intermediate shot put, intermediate discus and intermediate hammer), Sam Chittock (junior hammer), and the senior 4x100m relay team of Jack Belcher, Nic Shearer, Abe McArthur and Angus Hammett. The House Music competition was an awesome night for Somes House, coming through with the overall win. In reflecting on the outcome, it is great to see that everything came together as planned with our rendition of I’m a Believer under the leadership of Shyam Hari. The Small

All the above has been happening outside Somes House, either through College or outside the gates. The following is a small glimpse at what the students achieved through the interhouse competitions. INTERHOUSE EVENTS Open Interhouse Competitions The Swimming Sports were the first of the interhouse competitions affected by the disruptions due to Covid-19 limitations. However, we were able to have the individual events completed and, once again, James Currie led our team with five titles, including the senior swim champion for the second year and a further two College swimming records.
