GROUPS Chess

The Christ’s College Chess Club has continued to thrive in 2021. A growing number of dedicated boys have committed their time, energy and mental gymnastics to the activity during lunchtime sessions. The Canterbury Chess Championship was held in Term 3. This year, we entered three teams. The two B teams composed of Angus Whitteker, James Whitaker, Jake Hayes, Alex Fulton, Thomas Currie, William Oakley, Mitchell Young and Lucas Evans performed well, with one team finishing a close 2nd to St Andrew’s College. The A team, consisting of Jonathan Huo, Hanson Xie, Arthur Woolhouse and Jordan Yee, went on to draw the competition with St Andrew’s College, narrowly missing out on the title by one point.

However, the boys still qualified for the Nationals, which were due to be held in Auckland during the Term 3 break. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled because of Auckland’s lockdown. The House competition has continued to be highly competitive and a way for our club players to demonstrate their skills to their

them on behalf of the club for their leadership, enthusiasm and encouragement. They have brought new members to the group and have certainly led by example in terms of their passion for chess.
