CULTURE Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival
Echoes of Shakespeare’s iambic metre reverberated around the halls of the Old Boys’ Theatre and the Green Room throughout Term 1 as Year 12 student Ciaran Huntley directed a highly original rendition of Act 1, Scene ii of As You Like It . Soon to be known as “the wrestling scene”, the high art of Elizabethan drama collided with the physical jeopardy of professional wrestling in
this spirited interpretation. The first-time director ably managed all aspects of development and performance. This included corralling his “merry band of players” from Years 10, 11 and 12 into three rehearsals a week. The scene won recognition from the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Competition judges for its effective use of audience
interaction – particularly evident during the wrestling component. Involvement from Christ’s College boys did not end there. Actors Henry Briscoe and Josh Jolly also impressed the judges in their roles collaborating with a St Margaret’s College student, Ruby Gilligan, performing a student-directed scene from Macbeth . This scene won its category and the boys went on to perform in the national competitions in Wellington in late May. The boys greatly enjoyed the opportunity to be immersed in Shakespeare throughout the weekend and to mix with Drama students from throughout New Zealand.
