College fell to 60 for six. It took a 172-run partnership between Nick Gibb and Ben Breitmeyer – with Gibb scoring his maiden century for the team – to put a decent score on the board. After such a large partnership, St Thomas was unable to power back, and finished well adrift – with College’s Jordan Braithwaite the pick of the bowlers. vs Christchurch Boys’ High School 1st XI CBHS 292ao (Shore 4/49, Gibb 4/60) and 45/0 beat College 99ao (Idiens 31) and 236ao (Gibb 64, Luxon 45) by 10 wickets College was undone by a poor batting performance in the first innings after restricting CBHS to less than 300 when it looked like it would be far greater. However, in the second innings, College showed more grit, with five players getting in – two of them for more than 100 balls each. In the end, CBHS took the win with 10 overs left on the second day. Nick Gibb’s 64 runs was very good, but Sam Dickie’s 119-ball 21 was equally important. Term 1 also featured four T20 matches, initially against North West YC, St Bede’s and St Thomas, which College won well, and then against CBHS in the final, where College, unfortunately, lost. In the local competitions, College only lost twice in Term 1, both against CBHS. This represented a great effort and set up College for the second half of the season in Term 4. vs United Country and Vineyards (warm-up) College 202/9 (Breitmeyer 84*) beat UC&V 133ao (Shore 3/5, Braithwaite 2/6) by 69 runs The first warm-up match, played at the stunning Black Cottage vineyard, was a good match where a fine knock by Ben Breitmeyer was the difference between the teams. College’s bowlers also had a good run, with all the seamers showing excellent economy. vs Marlborough Boys’ College (warm-up) College 202/9 (Gibb 66, Shore 45)

2nd XI comfortably. The batting innings was set up by a fine 122-run opening partnership between Tim Seeto and Sam Idiens with Idiens going on to score his first century for the team. CBHS never looked like getting close, with Ciaran Huntley taking the first three wickets to put College on top. vs St Bede’s College St Bede’s 82ao (Breitmeyer 2/5, McClean 2/14) lost to College 84/5 (Shore 33) by 5 wickets College won for the third time in three weeks with a regulation win over St Bede’s. The St Bede’s batsmen never got going, with the College bowling too tight. It was Jordan Braithwaite’s turn to take the early wickets before Rob McClean, Ollie Shore and Ben Breitmeyer got in on the act. However, 82 was not going to trouble College and so it proved, with Shore anchoring the innings for a fine, all-round match. vs St Andrew’s College 1st XI – NZ Cup final College 152ao (Gibb 46) lost to St Andrew’s 156/2 (Breitmeyer 1/3, Braithwaite 1/27) by 8 wickets College’s first loss of the term came in the Gillette Cup final played at Hagley Oval. The match occurred in dreary conditions and chasing 150 looked as though it would be a challenge. So it was proving, with St Andrew’s struggling to get up with the required rate for the first 20 overs. However, with pressure building, the luck went the opposition’s way and St Andrew’s ran away with the match in a flurry of big shots to the huge disappointment of the College team. vs St Andrew’s College 1st XI College 234/6 (Gibb 92, Manson 57) beat St Andrew’s 1st XI 223/5 (Breitmeyer 1/3, Braithwaite 1/27) by 11 runs Revenge came quickly for the team who outplayed St Andrew’s in the big moments to defeat the rival side in the one-day competition three days after losing the Gillette Cup final. Nick Gibb and Caleb Manson were the heroes with the bat yet

beat Marlborough 50ao (Huntley 3/8, Braithwaite 2/4) by 157 runs The second warm-up match, played the next day, was a more one-sided affair. Nick Gibb and Ollie Shore shared an 87-run partnership to set up the victory, with the main strike bowlers cutting a swathe through the Marlborough batting for an easy win. vs Otago Boys’ High School (warm-up) College 175/6 (Idiens 36, Seeto 33) beat Otago BHS 167/8 (Dickie 2/31, Braithwaite 2/51) by 8 runs The team’s final warm-up match was a 30-over game against the Otago BHS 1st XI at The Willows. The batsmen played well and ran hard to set a challenging total and then the bowlers, led by Ollie Shore and Nick Gibb, restricted the Otago batsmen to a low run rate. Jordan Braithwaite and Sam Dickie took the wickets and the game was well won. vs Christchurch Boys’ High School 1st XI – NZ Cup semi-final College 224/9 (Manson 63, Rookes 39) beat CBHS 180ao (McClean 4/16, Huntley 3/28) by 44 runs This was the best team match seen from College for some time. Caleb Manson batted beautifully, allowing others to play around him, with Nick Gibb, Monty Rookes and Ben Breitmeyer hitting out to set a decent total on a challenging pitch. However, it was the excellence in the field and the bowlers sticking to their plans that really sealed the game, with CBHS never looking likely to reach the target. Rob McClean announced himself with a brilliant four-wicket bag and Ciaran Huntley was masterful both early and late in the innings. It was the first time the team had beaten CBHS in many years and resulted in College winning both the Ara Shield and the Heathcote-Williams Shield. vs Christchurch Boys’ High School 2nd XI College 266/4 (Idiens 112*, Seeto 55) beat CBHS 183ao (Huntley 3/20) by 83 runs College produced a fine all-round performance to defeat the CBHS
