3RD XI CRICKET Coach: Ryan Thomas
College posted its best innings of the term with a score of 269, with Will Patchett (65), Jack Coles (78) and Harry Sharr (94) the main contributors. In reply, SBC was bowled out for 153 and asked to follow on. In its second innings, St Bede’s was eventually bowled out for 194, setting College 82 to win. Jamie Barr was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/41 and 4/34 in the two innings. With limited overs, College chased down the total for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs to claim its first win of the term. In the last match, College played the St Andrew’s College (STAC) 2nd XI, who batted first and was bowled out for 117, with Jack Belcher taking 4/23 and Barr 3/17. In reply, College lost its last wicket at 117 for a tied first innings. The STAC second innings proved much the same to the first one, and the opposition was eventually bowled out for 130, with Will Patchett taking 3/10 to finish the innings off. Set 131, College lost consistent wickets and was 60/5, then 76/6 and 110/7 – losing Jack Coles (34) and Jamie Barr (29). Tom Harrison joined Tom Clarke with the score on 118 and with one wicket left. They stayed at the crease for 7.2 overs – under great pressure – to squeeze out the final 13 runs needed for victory by one wicket. The win meant that the College 2nd XI finished 3rd in the two-day competition behind the CBHS 2nd XI and Timaru BHS 1st XI. In Term 4, the 2nd XI competed in the CMCA 1st XI One-day Cup competition, along with the College Development XI. The term started with a home match against the St Thomas 1st XI. Batting first, College scored 277/8 off 50 overs, with Will Patchett scoring 57 and Jamie Barr scoring the team’s only century of the year. In a great display of hitting late in the innings – including 16 off the last over – Jamie finished 102no off 106 balls. Despite a very good total, College was unable to defend this against an onslaught from the STC batsman, resulting in a three- wicket loss. The next game was the local derby against the Development XI, who
started the season with a very good win. Batting first, the 2nd XI was in trouble at 87/6 but Jamie Barr (55) and a couple of good partnerships powered the team through to 186. In reply, the Development XI was bowled out for 126, thanks to Will Patchett’s 5/28. In the next match against St Bede’s College, College failed to chase down 146 runs, finishing 16 runs short and needing to get back on track. The team then launched a winning streak in the last four round-robin matches. A five-wicket win over Shirley was achieved when the opposition was bowled out for 96, with Tom Clarke taking 3/5 and James Luxon scoring 55. Against St Andrew’s College, the opposition set College 271. College was in trouble early at 40/4 but Jamie Barr (30) and Harry Sharr put on 108, and then 46 with Tom Clarke. Harry scored a brilliant 99 off 106 balls but College was 230/8. Hamish Falls- Anderson (41no) and Tom Harrison (20no) then scored 42 off 36 balls to win with a ball to spare. This win gave the team great confidence and College went on to defeat both CBHS 3rd XI Blue and then the Sydenham 1st XI by five wickets to qualify for the one-day final against the CC Development XI. A cold, wet day delayed the start of the final before the 2nd XI won the toss and opted to bowl first. It had the Development XI at 17/3 but a good 4th partnership and late- order batting pushed the side to 198 all out. Tom Harrison bowled two great spells to finish with 6/31 off his 10 overs while George Ryan was responsible for three catches and a stumping. In reply, the 2nd XI lost wickets regularly and was 94/6 in the 30th over. George Ryan (57) and Tom Clarke (51no) then produced a match-winning partnership, with Tom hitting a six to win the match for the 2nd XI. It was a great finish to the season, winning the 1st XI Cup one-day competition after finishing 3rd in the 1st XI Cup two-day competition. Rob Clarke Coach
Team: Levi Astle (captain), Jed Gimblett (captain), Bruno Davies, Thomas Douglas, Santino Felitti- Duter, Monty Hamilton, Ollie Jones, Robbie McKeon, Jonathan Murphy, Joe Pfahlert, Alex Stead, Ashwin Thomas, Robbie Ward In the team’s first match of the season in Term 1, the boys struggled before upping their game to cruise home comfortably for a win in the following match. That set the pattern for most of the year, with a run of mixed results. By the end of Term 1, both Levi Astle and Alex Stead had gained promotion to the Development XI and Bruno Davies had also impressed but was hampered by an injury. Following Levi’s step up, Jed Gimblett took over the captaincy. Fewer numbers caused some disruption but the players delivered several good efforts, competing well and striving to improve. In Term 4, the team had lost some top players to promotions and injuries. Understandably, the boys lost their first two matches. Following a recruitment drive, the team was back in the game, winning the round three match. An impressive 240-run total led to a 100-run-plus win, leaving the boys in a positive position. Joe Pfahlert had now become a real force, opening the bowling with wily off-spin, while Monty Hamilton and Ashwin Thomas had batsmen hopping at the crease as they knocked wickets over at will. Santino Felitti-Duter caught anything within 30 metres while Thomas Douglas took over as keeper, doing an impressive job and also scoring runs. Robbie Ward joined the side late but soon was part of a strong line-up. In the match against the bottom of the table Selwyn Lions – with leading bowler Monty Hamilton out injured – the team struggled to knock over the opposition, conceding 207 runs. Quickly reduced to 27/2 in pursuit, College was struggling. However, Jono Murphy and Alex Scott were determined to fight back, fashioning
