an 182-run partnership and scoring maiden 50s for the team. The No. 5 waiting for two and a half hours in his pads was not required and Jono’s grin stayed for days. In the end, the side finished mid- table in both terms. However, the boys loved playing cricket together and planned to do it all again in 2022. Ryan Thomas Coach DEVELOPMENT XI Coach: Jono Brent, Craig Aitken Team: Josh Beaglehole (captain), Matthew Hocquard (captain), Levi Astle, Henry Blackley, Jack Brent, Will Bretherton, Charlie Eglinton, James Kelly, Robert McClean, Nate Ovendale, Alex Scott, Alex Stead, Lewis Whiteside, Joshua Wood During Term 1, the Development XI was playing in the two-day competition, starting slowly with a drawn first match. In the second game, College gained its first outright and first-innings win. This was followed in the next match with Matthew Hocquard scoring 110 and Henry Blackley 67. Even though College had the opposition on the ropes at 98/8, with Matthew Hocquard taking 6/28 in the second innings, the team could not get the final wickets to get the win. In the fourth game, College took another outright and first-innings win, with Matthew Hocquard taking 4/11 and 6/28. In the final match, College needed an outright win to take the title. Rob McClean took 5/14 in an opening spell that left the opposition 11/6 after a handful of overs. Needing 102 in the second innings to win the grade, College was 88/8, before Rob McClean and Charlie Eglinton got the team home to secure the two- day title. By winning the two-day competition, we moved up to the 1st XI Cup one- day competition. Will Bretherton took 5/22 to secure a win in the first game, before being shown how to dig yourself out of a hole by the College 2nd XI to hand us the first loss.

Against the Sydenham 1st XI, Matthew Hocquard scored 78 and James Kelly 57, before Lewis Whiteside took 5/14 to comfortably win the match. With 20 runs from the first two overs against the St Thomas of Canterbury College 1st XI, we were able to dismiss the opposition for 101, with Matthew Hocquard taking 5/32. Matthew Hocquard (54) and Levi Astle (43) helped steer the team to 204 against the Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) 3rd XI. CBHS needed seven runs in the final two overs – with three wickets in hand – to win the match. College took three wickets for three runs to win with one ball left. Charlie Eglinton took 5/30 against the St Bede’s College 2nd XI, and Matthew Hocquard scored 66 and Alex Stead 34, with College needing 50 runs in 22 overs before the rain forced us off the field. However, College was ahead in the scoring and secured the win. To reach the final College needed to win against the Shirley Boys’ High School (SBHS) 1st XI. With accurate bowling, SBHS was all out for 222. Needing a good batting performance, Matthew Hocquard led the way – scoring 92, his fourth half century this term – along with Levi Astle (57no) to ensure College was at the top of the table, with six wins from seven matches, and in the final against the College 2nd XI. In the final, a 104-run partnership from Levi Astle (64) and Nate Ovendale (31), and late surges from James Kelly, Joshua Wood and Will Bretherton, steered the team to 198 in 50 overs. With the opposition 33/4 and then 94/6, the Development XI just could not get the final wickets – finishing the runner-up in the 1st XI Cup one-day competition. Craig Aitken Coach

McCormack-Young, Frankie Meates, Lucas Minehan, Carlos Parker In Term 1, the Colts Black XI played two-day cricket. Split into two pools, College finished top of its pool after outright victories over St Bede’s College and Christchurch Boys’ High School. A first-innings lead was gained over North West in the drawn match. Only one further match was completed, that being a close outright loss to St Andrew’s College. This match coincided with the top four teams playing off in a round- robin format. Half centuries were scored by Paddy Cochran (two), Ben Laing, Lucas Minehan, Jackson Garry, Finn McCormack-Young, and Frankie Meates, while Ben Laing was the highest wicket taker, twice taking four wickets in an innings. While the team was not consistent from day to day, it appeared that individuals were able to play critical roles at crucial stages in each game to assist with the result. With the batting, Finn McCormack-Young always appeared to take control of the game as he scored the most runs for the team. Tom Hodges was very consistent, while Paddy Cochran showed glimpses of excellent talent. Carlos Parker’s innings against North West turned the game, while Finn McCormack-Young and Frankie Meates repeated this in each innings against Christchurch Boys’ High School. Jackson Garry’s excellent innings gave the team a chance against the strong St Andrew’s College team. Likewise with the bowling, the wickets were shared, with Frankie Meates often potent. Jackson Garry, at times, was excellent with his control, while Ben Laing was always consistent. The team could be proud of finishing in the top three. The second half of the season featured one-day games played in coloured clothing. This part of the season almost mirrored the first as there was limited consistency, and individuals turned games by themselves. In the final round-robin game, College effectively played in a semi-final, but a loss could easily have relegated the team to play off
