though the team finished second equal with rival Colts Black, the loss to the fellow College team in Week 1 meant the boys were pipped at the post for a finals spot. A disappointing end to the season. However, the boys can be proud of their efforts as a team – both on and off the field.
players conducted themselves and the sheer determination to play as well as they could was evident in every game, as well as displaying excellent sportsmanship. The match of the year was against fellow table-topping St Thomas of Canterbury College, where the Year 10 A side bowled the opposition out for 205, with wickets shared across the bowling attack. The team chased down the runs required in 31 overs for the loss of eight wickets, with Ollie Nicholson (66 runs) and Ben Beattie (23 runs) sharing a 74-run stand to put the team in a winning position. Dan Flutey’s sense of humour and positivity encouraged a strong team outlook while Lucas Maguire displayed kindness, maturity and sportsmanship to bring out the best in the team. A massive thank you to Hamish Newstead who was the team coach in 2020 and 2021. He related well to the boys, knew what made them tick, and was well respected as a coach with his pleasant and approachable style. His commitment to the team was clearly evident and I know the many parent supporters appreciated his efforts. Best of luck for your future endeavours. 9A CRICKET Manager: Gill Kilpatrick Coach: Ben Williams and Michael Flatman Team: Henry Hiatt (captain), Ewan Whiteside (vice-captain), Lachie Beirne, Ben Campbell, Harry Flatman, Alex Fulton, Louie Garry, James Hadden, Fynn Harrington, Basti Julian, Alf Markham, Euan McVicar, Harry Smith, Ollie Young In Term 1, the boys worked together as a team and started to play some excellent cricket. The positive energy among the boys and their genuine love of the game were clear from the outset. The boys played eight games in Term 1, losing only two – against St Bede’s College and North West. The team had a standout game against Christchurch Boys’ High School A. While College bowled
well, Boys’ High made 227 before being dismissed in the 43rd over. With a big chase on their hands, an excellent partnership between Alf Markham (97no) and Ewan Whiteside (75no) powered College to a comfortable win – by seven wickets – in the 37th over. In Term 4, College played eight games, with an equal number of wins and losses. The boys got off to a flying start against St Thomas of Canterbury College, quickly shaking off the remnants of the winter season. Openers Henry Hiatt and Louie Garry put on 126 runs in 19 overs before the rest of the order kept the scoreboard ticking over. At the end of the 45 overs, College was 274/7. St Thomas did not get off to the best start, with Alf Markham taking two wickets in the first over. The entire attack bowled very well and asked the St Thomas batters plenty of questions. The opposition was eventually bowled out for 100. Among the Term 4 highlights was the game against St Andrew’s College (STAC). Having just lost to STAC in the NZCT round, the boys were determined to win. Opening bowlers Alf Markham and Harry Flatman maintained excellent lengths, taking three quick wickets between them. Ben Campbell then dismissed STAC’s big hitter, off-spinner Ollie Young bowled a great seven-over spell and chipped out a couple of wickets and Euan McVicar bowled with excellent pace and scared off the tail. STAC was bowled out for 135 inside 28 overs. Openers Lachie Beirne and Fynn Harrington got the chase off to an excellent start, with an opening stand of 60. The target was reached in 21 overs. After a couple of losses, it was great to get the win, but, more importantly, the boys played with positive intent and enjoyment of the game. Despite our losses, the boys were a credit to the school in terms of their positive attitude and sense of integrity. Thanks to them, it has been an enjoyable year. Thanks also to the committed parents who make excellent sideline companions. And,

Team: Bede Elkington (captain), Ben Beattie, Felix Bowden, Dan Flutey, Tom Hansen, Louis Hastie, Baxter Lamberg, Lucas Maguire, Ollie Nicholson Aston Nijjar, Jacob Onions, William Pearson, Thornton Reid, Nick Winefield The Year 10A cricket team, ably led by Bede Elkington, enjoyed success in both terms, winning 10 out of the 11 games played across the year. Most of the runs were scored by Ollie Nicholson and Aston Nijjar, with valuable contributions from Bede Elkington, Louis Hastie, William Pearson, Lucas Maguire, Ben Beattie, and Thornton Reid. The team consistently set big scores when batting first and then put pressure on the opposition in the field, as well as pacing run chases well. Wickets were shared throughout the team but some notable performances came from Jacob Onions (5/25 and 15 wickets for the year), Aston Nijjar (4/22 and 11 wickets for the year), Tom Hansen (3/11 on debut for the team), and many other three-wicket hauls, including Baxter Lamberg with 3/22 – the only time he did not wicket keep for the year. Fielding played a massive part in the success of the team and it went from strength to strength to the point where it was hard to remember when the players last dropped a catch. Ground fielding, backing up throws, and teamwork in the field also improved throughout the year. A really pleasing aspect was the true sense of camaraderie displayed within the team. There were many encouraging comments and an ethic of supporting teammates in all situations. The spirit in which the
