9B WHITE CRICKET Manager: Thomas Bailey Coach: George Anderson Team: Albie Anderson, Samuel Belcher, Lucas Carr, Thomas Cathro, Angus Haugh, Max McNulty, Euan McVicar, Alex Rutherford, Darcy Terpstra, Hugo Trolove, David Wayne The Christ’s College Year 9B White season began with a group of excited new faces, with friendships and bonds quickly formed through cricket. The squad competed in the Cricket Express Year 9B competition, consisting of 35-over matches. In Term 1, the combinations and friendships soon developed to have a positive impact on the field, with the first win coming in the third round. In all, the 12 games were split evenly, with six wins and six losses. However, there were more highlights than low spots. One highlight stands out – an end-of-season match going down to the wire. Max McNulty produced a brilliant hat-trick in the final over to secure the three-run win. Overall, the boys never dropped their standards – even in the face of defeat – and this quality was just as evident during nail-biting close encounters and one-sided matches. The early hard work continued in Term 4. Through the uncertainty of Covid-19, wet weather, extreme heat and injuries to multiple team members, the spirit of the team remained high, ensuring that the boys delivered fantastic team and individual displays. Again, the team recorded a split record, three wins and three losses, to finish 9th overall. However, two losses were against the top two sides in the division. As the season continued, the ‘extras’ column dwindled, highlighting improvements, both individually and as a team. Many games were decided by a wicket or two, but some were decided by fewer than 20 runs. Later in the season, the team registered its highest individual runs scored, and then first 100-run partnership in the final game. Not only was there improvement in the batting and bowling, but fielding became a real strength of the side and the

ability to catch people out won the boys a few games. The ability and improvements shown by the group from Term 1 to Term 4 was very clear. It is great to see so many boys continuing with cricket, always striving for greatness, and focusing on learning and playing within the spirit of the game. You never know how far it can take you. The awards for Players’ Player, Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Best Fielder went to Angus Haugh, Thomas Cathro, Euan McVicar and Samuel Belcher, respectively. Congratulations and best of luck with the 2022 season. T20 BULLS CRICKET Manager & Coach: Carey Prebble Team: Lachie Short (captain), Nick Wilson (vice-captain), James Bernau, Wilby Cameron, Jonty Inglis, Leo Jelley, George Kain, Logan Marshall, Thomas McCulloch, Finn Melhuish, Harry Rookes, Jono Rookes It was a positive year for the T20 Bulls team, led by captain Lachie Short and vice-captain Nick Wilson. At the time of writing this report, the team was sitting second in its division. The boys adopted the philosophy that they were there for a good time, not necessarily a long time. This resulted in the high drama you would expect from T20 matches, along with some genuine cricket plays sprinkled in the mix. It was pleasing to see the team tighten up in the field and work hard to keep down their extras. A big part of this had been convincing the boys to cut back the comical number of slips and disperse players in more useful fielding positions. The most exciting matches were against the Boys’ High Hostel. On two occasions, these came down to the final over. College won one of these encounters and narrowly lost the second match, with memorable batting performances by Leo Jelley and Wilby Cameron. However, the boys needed to work on consistency in their bowling and establishing batting partnerships.
9B BLACK CRICKET Manager: James Hodgins Coach: Ben Williams
Team: Henry Church, Morgan Clancy, Hayden Douglass, Sam Glennie, James Hadden, Seb Hailey, Tinura Madduma Gajamange, Geordie Pavey, Charlie Raine, Daniel Robertson, George Scott The 2021 9B Black cricket team produced a season full of excitement, laughter, applause, and fun for everyone. The first year of secondary school can be daunting. However, the way these young men developed throughout the season – both on and off the field – led to a successful season, with the team narrowly missing a finals spot to finish 4th overall. North West and St Bede’s College proved to be the toughest opponents but College produced some great performances in the season, including the 136-run partnership of Geordie Pavey and Morgan Clancy against North West, as well as an impressive 44 by Sam Glennie in Term 1. When it came to bowling, 9B Black also showed a lot of heart, with a mixture of pace, spin and off-speed deliveries resulting in everyone contributing a wicket. Seb Hailey and James Hadden proved to be perennial wicket takers, with Charlie Raine and George Scott also enjoying a lot of success with the ball. The energy in the field was a testament to the camaraderie within the team and a big reason for College allowing the second lowest number of runs in the competition. A special mention must go to Hayden Douglass and Sam Glennie for their hard work behind the wicket throughout the season.
