The understanding of the formation and style of play was clear to see in the top-of-the-table clash against Papanui Redwood. The opposition was unbeaten after dropping from Division 3. College could have been 5–0 up after 20 minutes, but eventually came away with a dominant 1–0 win in the most complete performance of the season. Then, in appalling weather conditions, the boys beat Parklands 2–1 on home turf, temporarily pushing College to the top of the table. Unfortunately, the season ended abruptly – with two league games left to play – amid the Covid-19-related Alert Level 4 lockdown. However, to finish the season with five wins in the last six games illustrated the strength of character shown by each player. To move from bottom of the table to two points shy of 1st place highlighted the quality of play and demeanour displayed by the boys, with some in contention for the top two College teams next season. While there were several strong performances, the 3rd XI prizes were awarded to goalie and captain Joe Pfahlert (MVP) and Will Bretherton (Footballer’s Footballer). The top scorer was James Bernau, with six goals. Thank you to all involved and a special mention to the Year 13s in the squad, Janindu Pahalawatta and Dexter Parris, who played their final games for the school. Rheon Salt, Alex Scott, Lachie Short, Robbie Ward, Scott Winefield, Lucca Wiseman The 2021 season was a season of two halves. College started with several grading games to find different combinations who worked towards the team playing good, fast football and creating lots of chances to score. During these rounds, College often dominated and created chances but could not put the ball in the net. However, goalkeeper Ciaran Huntley made some spectacular saves to keep the games level, or the losing margin slim. Once the team found its shape and with some wins, the boys started to play with confidence, trying to build the play from the back with centre backs Jack Coles, Scott Winefield or Brad Crestani, and combine the play with Rocco Barker on the right side or Robbie Ward/Lachie Short on the left side. This defensive unit was exceptional in the second half of the season, with the cool-headed Brad Crestani returning from injury. In the middle of the field, College had numerous player options, including captain Harry Sharr, who led by example and worked hard to keep the shape of the team and control the tempo of the game. Finlay Broomhall proved to be a wall in defence and helped link the ball with attacking players Rheon Salt, Josh Beaglehole, Charles Lord and Tavor Abraham. In particular, Josh Beaglehole had a fantastic season, and was subsequently awarded several games in the 1st XI. At the front, College again had many options, with Henri Murison, Archie Franks, Ben Breitmeyer, Alex Scott and Lucca Wiseman. It was hard to choose between starting players as the quality of each was so good. In the first half of the season, the team was unlucky at times. However, the boys were close to flawless in the second half. College’s 4–2 win against old foe Nomads United in the final round highlighted the growth and development of the team. Had the season not been cut short by Covid-19 issues, College was in the right form to win the final games and
finish in the top three of the league. It was a very enjoyable season, and pleasing to see so many players lift their skills and getting along well on the pitch and away from the football field. The league is described as a “pathway for young football- crazed juniors and youth to refine their knowledge and skills required to become the next Annalie Longo, Chris Wood or Winston Reid”. This has meant playing high-quality opposition teams – week after week – under lights and the protocols of a professional footballing experience. From the start, there were four tight matches – three against teams who were our footballing equals and would join College in the CUDL B League established later in the season. The first game against Selwyn was narrowly lost but showed that our players deserved to be in the CUDL league. The following three matches were closer, with plenty of goals. Unfortunately, College lost the most exhilarating match – against Cashmere Technical – after leading for most of the match. Matthew Brett scored two goals, with Paddy Cochran adding one and Lucas Evans scoring the probable goal of the season. The next four games were against the three teams who would form
