technical skill, but also their overall understanding of the game. However, the most eye-catching was the 5–3 win against last season’s winner, Nomads United, where College won plenty of admirers with the possession-based play favoured by coach Kevin Guttmann. Playing from the back, the boys patiently recycled the ball, looking to make progressive passes to unlock the attacking flair of Tasman Daly, Freddie Coates, Oscar Talbot, and top goal-scorer Nikau Davis. From a defensive point of view, the collective efforts of Ben Laing, Mark Reidie, Ollie Gormack, James Wood, and the athletic dominance of Fletcher Tapper ensured Nomads’ physically imposing centre-forward was rendered ineffective. Moreover, it was difficult to overlook the

fluid transition play from College’s midfield players that orchestrated play, pulling the two ends of the pitch together. A solid performance from Alex Rutherford, Ollie Biggs, Ollie Walker, Ben Rookes, and Daniel Wilson extinguished Nomads United’s hopes of winning the league undefeated. This cemented U14A as one the best teams in the league but, unfortunately, the boys were unable to carry this momentum as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic brought an abrupt end to the season. College unknowingly ended the season with a rather dramatic and memorable match against Ferrymead United – a finale in inclement weather. Severe rain, hail, and icy winds could not deter the boys’ passion and desire to win.

Over the course of the season, football has offered the opportunity to experience camaraderie and encouragement that comes from being part of a competitive team. Not only have they developed a deep interest for the game, under the astute guidance of Kevin Guttmann, the boys have made incredible strides as football players and should be proud of their efforts and achievements in 2021.
