The team also struggled with injuries, with Fynn Harrington only gaining full fitness in the final quarter of the season, and Darcy Laidlaw, James Burt and Josh Garland all missing some matches. The goals were harder to come by this year, with several very strong opponents. Matt Flint led the way with six goals, with Mitchell Young and Callum Gard close behind on five. When fit, the midfield duo of Fynn and Darcy were very strong and, at the end of the first half of the season, they were instrumental in the team playing some fantastic hockey. The matches against St Andrew’s College Colts, Christchurch Boys’ High School Colts and the Papanui High School 1st XI – while bringing no wins – were fantastic matches, with strong passing, great defence and full commitment. Jonty Gray and Max Falvey both grew into their roles on the defensive flanks as the games progressed and were deserving recipients of their respective awards. Another highlight was the play of Charles Beale. He managed to not only reinvent himself as a forward, but also scored against Shirley Boys’ High School – much to his teammates’ delight. Sadly, the U15 Tanner Cup tournament was cancelled for the second year running. Let us hope that 2022 proves to be a complete season. Many thanks to Llewey Heale for his inspirational and thorough
preparation of the boys in training and his comments and support during the games. The boys will have gained much from his experience and tactical nous. I would also like to thank the parents for their support throughout the year – it is much appreciated. P14 W4 D2 L8 GF22 GA36 Andrew Levenger Manager YOUTH BLACK HOCKEY Manager: Warren Lidstone Coach: Keryn Ambler Team: Sam Bennett, Mitch Brents, Finnian Chan-Allan, Duncan Clarkson, Logan Connolly, Jackson Flint, Jackson Hart, Ohm Intoratat, Joshua Peckitt, Ben Peebles, Wil Donaldson, Felix Stanton, Harry Vaughan, Seann Zhao The Youth Black team found the season very tough in Division 3. Significant defeats were delivered by the top teams. By the end of the first round, only two close games were played – St Bede’s College (draw) and St Andrew’s College (win). Through good decision-making, College was eventually placed in the lower tier of the division, with rivals Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS), St Andrew’s College, and the promoted St Bede’s College Colts. Suddenly, as the team began to play against opposition of a similar ability, the improvement was obvious and positive play developed. Another good win was secured against St Andrew’s College and a draw was secured against CBHS (despite College dominating the game). In the semi-final, the boys worked very hard, but sickness and absence disrupted play, resulting in a close loss to CBHS. Overall, there were some significant improvements. A good attack was promoted down the right-hand side, but College often struggled to convert excellent opportunities. The team’s defence improved all year, keeping College in several games, while the midfield was crucial in setting up play. College recorded two wins and two draws in the season.
Ohm Intoratat improved in goal and was keen to slide into the ball. The defenders were based around Sam Bennett and Joshua Peckitt in an effective strong-tackling middle, and Duncan Clarkson and Jackson Flint out wide making many crucial tackles. Midfield was led by a strong trio of Harry Vaughan, Seann Zhao and Finnian Chan-Allan. Seann was a strong defender, while the attack stemmed from Harry and Finnian. Wil Donaldson became a strong right attacker, linking up well with particularly Finnian, while strikers Logan Connolly, Felix Stanton, Jackson Hart and Mitch Brents all had games of influence. All the strikers scored goals, with Wil the leading scorer. Most Valuable Player – Finnian Chan-Allan Most Improved Player – Duncan Clarkson
