Next up, College faced Christchurch Combined, with Edward leading his young team well from the back to retain an early two-goal lead for the win. In the final match against St Andrew’s College, College again faced a ‘rundown’ to decide the outcome. The faster-paced opposition overcame College, leaving the boys 2nd overall. Edward Davidson was awarded ‘the best pony’ of the tournament – a great accomplishment with a pony he had trained himself. B Grade: Charlie Burdon, Henry Bowmar, Ethan Kepple, Elliot Lee In the B Grade, College started strongly against Christchurch Girls’ High School, applying the pressure to win 2–0. In a close game
against Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, the outcome was again decided on a rundown. While College started strongly, by midway Rangi Ruru had overtaken the boys to cross the line first and take the win. In the last game against Christchurch Girl’s High Red, a capable young team proved too strong for College, with Red winning 3–0. Overall, College B had an impressive tournament. D Grade: Claude Armstrong, Tom Costley, Ben Donaldson, Caden Lewis In the first competition for a young team, many boys were new to riding and had only recently learnt how to hit a ball from a moving pony. However, the boys played with determination. In the first match against St
Margaret’s College, the boys had a great chukka, with Caden scoring the winning goal to finish 1–0. In the second match against Rangiora, the faster opposition won 3–0. In the last match against Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, College had many shots on goal but just missed while Rangi had two luck shots, winning 2–0. The boys showed great sportsmanship and learnt much from their first tournament.
