the third 500m, resulting in a 10sec margin as it entered the final quarter. With this almost insurmountable lead, the crew was able to lower the stroke rate in the last 500m and enjoy the moment, beating Auckland Grammar by 7sec. As the Rowing New Zealand commentator put it, this was the most dominant performance she had seen in an U18 boys’ eight race. Not to be outdone, the 2nd eight fought gallantly with Hamilton Boys’ High School for fourth place. Unfortunately, College could not match the final sprint, settling for a
very credible fifth place. After the regatta, three boys – Liam Alexander, George Trolove, and Thomas McEwan – were offered New Zealand U19 trials, with Ned Botherway and Abe McArthur offered South Island U18 trials. A huge thanks to coaches Malcolm McIntyre, Andrew Taylor, Jimmy Healey, Will Satch, Liam O’Leary and Nathan Luff who set out the blueprint for all the success at the start of the season. A final acknowledgement must go to the parents who spent countless hours assisting the boat club in many
capacities. From raising funds to help plant and equipment purchases, through to cooking more than 4000 meals for the boys at various training camps. Their support and assistance have enabled the Christ’s College Rowing Club to be the club it is today. Thank you.
