After losing three Year 13s at the end of 2020 from our top team, we were always going to be rebuilding. The highlight of the year was finishing fifth at the National Secondary School Tennis Championships. Again we have continued our run of placing among the top schools. The greatest disappointment was the cancellation of the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament, with the country moving to Covid-19 Alert Level 2. This was particularly challenging as we started off very well on the first day of the competition and looked on course for a title chance. In late February, the two A teams travelled to Timaru for a weekend at the South Island Tennis Championships. It did not go according to plan. After a great start on Saturday – with many players
completing their matches and some outstanding sportsmanship – we learnt that the country was moving to Alert Level 2. On Sunday, the competition was to resume without spectators. However, rain disrupted play and the tournament was eventually cancelled. In March, the A team travelled to Auckland for the national
championships. We had four days of spectacular weather, and every team member gave their best effort. Halfway through the competition, our No. 1 player, Nant Prachuabmoh, reinjured his ACL on court, leaving Nathan McKenzie to take the top spot. The team managed this setback well, with everyone putting in more hours on the court and giving their all to help College finish fifth.
