Junior B: Samuel Pye, Daniel Roberston, Ethan Yao, Willie Ryan, Mark Reidie, Jeffery Jiang, and the Flower’s crew of Bede Elkington, Max Airey, Logan Connolly, Frank O’Gara, Thomas Hazeldine, Tom Hodges, Will Donaldson For the first time in many years, we were able to have two College junior teams playing in the Term 4 competition. Lionel Randall, who arrived at College mid-way through Term 2 from Auckland, had coached Old Boy Louis Clark and our senior coach, Hamish Sullivan, in the New Zealand School Boys’ teams and had been involved with both in the New Zealand Men’s U20 competition. His arrival was exciting for College water polo. Lionel’s enthusiasm meant that there
was never a dull moment during the B team’s trips and games at Taiora QEII. The boys quickly responded to his ‘all-in style’ and despite winning only one game, they had a great time. At times, the team resembled a mini version of Flower’s House, with boys being offered the chance to ‘skip’ prep if they played in the team. More often than not, the College van was full and rocking on the trips to the games. The boys gained a lot of water polo skills and quickly embraced the sport, with extremely positive results. The College A team was entered in a very ruthless competition and with boys opting to leave and try other sports, it was always going to be a hard task. George Wilson led the team with his large repertoire of
skills, backed up by junior captain Callum Gard. Once again, Covid-19 caused disruption, with all games unseen by parents. We narrowly lost a couple of close games because of a lack of supporters. The South Island Secondary Schools junior competition was a casualty of Covid-19 and a trip to Blenheim was cancelled, which, despite the previous losses, caused some heartbreak as we were building towards this throughout the season. Thanks to our coaches, Hamish Sullivan and Lionel Randall, and technical advisor Isaac Aitken for all their input throughout the year.
