Katie Southworth HoD Commerce DRAMA The Drama Department has had another successful year of helping the students to work collaboratively and creatively. It is a true pleasure to see their confidence develop along with their technical dramatic skills and abilities. After the disruptions and constant changes of 2020 we had hopes that 2021 would bring more stability around our performance events and although several traditions were again impacted, we were extremely grateful to be able to continue with our senior productions of As You Like It and Oedipus Rex , our junior production of Fame Jr. , our annual House Plays Festival, Theatresports competitions, Shakespeare Festival and New Zealand Theatre Festival as well as all senior drama students carrying out their NCEA performances as needed but, in many cases, minus an outside audience.

Our senior students have dabbled in many fascinating areas of theatre this year – with standout performances in the Year 11 Brechtian performance from Ed Davidson and Matt Brett and Year 11 Devising from Lachlan McVicar and Duncan Fletcher. In Year 12 Shakespeare from William Olsson and Adam Raitt, and Year 12 Devising from Jacob Clements and Jasper Johnson. In Year 13 Acting Technique from Josh Jolly and Hamish McCulloch and Year 13 Absurdist performance from Freddie Sudell and Jamie Barr. We were thrilled to have another three exceptional Drama Scholars to add to the prestigious Wall of Fame in the Old Boys’ Theatre. Year 13 students Jamie Yee, Dominic Edmond and Fletcher Anderson were awarded the nationwide scholarship at the end of 2020, each putting forward an incredible collection of three performances. It is no easy task, and students and staff put in a mammoth effort to bring to life a well- known monologue, a self-devised monologue and an improvisation – all filmed as a solo examination. As a department we are very much looking forward to the new teaching and learning that will arise from the implementation of the College Diploma. In 2022 we will have new courses in acting technique, creating and devising theatre, clowning and stage fighting and movement for the Year 10 and 11 students. These courses will allow the students to take charge of their learning pathways, follow their interests, upskill in new areas and build further on their strengths. As a new member of staff at the College this year I have been immensely impressed by the skills, determination and courage of both staff and students. In Drama, students are given the tools to explore both the world around them as well as who they are as a person and it is a privilege to be on that journey with these remarkable young people. In Drama, we see the students taking risks and moving
