When and why was LEGCT established? e organisation traces its roots back to 1874 when it was founded to provide scholarships for Liverpool school pupils to continue their education in local secondary schools. In addition to awarding scholarships, it was responsible for producing examination papers to determine eligible recipients. Over time, the role expanded. An important milestone was becoming an incorporated charity in September, 1925, which meant that as well as managing its own funds the organisation could act as corporate trustee of subsidiary charities linked to specic schools, or established to award prizes to pupils who demonstrated exceptional ability in specic subjects. e organisation has always tried to evolve as educational needs change. For at least the last 50 years, the main focus has shied towards supporting Liverpool secondary schools and individual students by providing awards and grants for extracurricular activities that fall outside the core school budget. One of LEGCT’s key areas of support is funding for schools and individual students. Can you give an example of how these grants have made a dierence? Examples of grants made to schools in 2024-25 include funds to equip a ‘calm space’ room for pupils with anxiety issues; part-funding of an educational trip to London for a guided tour of the British Museum; funding for a school’s ‘Liverpool Slavery Project’; and a contribution towards sports infrastructure - a long jump pit - at a Liverpool school. In total, grants have been made to approximately 20 dierent schools in the last ve years. In addition, some grants have beneted individual pupils. In recent years, the main group helped in this way has been the Liverpool pupils who wanted to participate in democratic initiatives such as the International Model European Parliament UK. Very exceptionally, grants have also been made to assist individual pupils attend courses which are not available in Liverpool itself, including, for example, a further education course in agriculture which required the pupil to travel to Preston.
