A Sobering Introduction from the host

Before the day's sessions unfolded, Carmel Dickinson set the tone with a powerful introduction, drawing on compelling research. Citing a Santander survey conducted with Female Founder Rise, she revealed that a staggering 80% of school children could not name a female founder. Despite women establishing only 1 in 5 companies, 2023 saw a veritable boom in women-fronted businesses – more than doubling the numbers from 2018. However, she pointed out the persistent challenges: in 2020/2021, less than 9% of funding went to women or diverse-founded businesses, even though diverse founders achieved 30% higher returns upon exit than their white, male counterparts. With 89% of funding still going to the latter group , Carmel emphasised the monumental economic benets that could be realised – an estimated $160 trillion increase in human capital wealth and a 26% boost in annual global GDP if more women entrepreneurs thrived.

Carmel's message was clear - "We must create this new ecosystem together." She welcomed men into the room, stressing that collaboration is essential for success. is focus on inclusivity resonated deeply with the audience. Denise Wright, an Executive Education Ocer from the Management School who helped launch Help to Grow , was on hand to answer questions and co-host the day alongside organiser Carmel Dickinson. Wright's presence underscored the value of bridging academic expertise with real-world enterprise. She explained the scheme's benets—from enhancing leadership skills to building a supportive alumni network—and encouraged local entrepreneurs to take advantage of this "incredible opportunity" to level up their businesses.
