School Lunches Back to School: A History of As Kid Scoop News readers return to school, they start to wonder, what’s for lunch? And what will I use to carry my lunch? When people started eating lunch at work or school, lunches were packed into pails, baskets, and tins. What do you use when you pack a lunch? Turn of the Century Serving school lunch to children began in the early 1900s when it was believed that many children did not eat a nutritious midday meal. In America’s colonial times, the midday meal was called dinner. It was the biggest meal of the day. Most families ate this meal together at home, even if the children attended school. Supper was the evening meal, and it was typically smaller and made up of leftovers.

The Great Depression was a time of great hardship. Parents were without jobs, and their children went without good food. At the same time, farmers had produce that people couldn’t afford to buy. The government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt bought up the extra food and opened kitchens which started the school lunch program.
