INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

Rochester is also home to numerous quality hospitals and specialized medical facilities. Of course, the world-renowned Mayo Clinic has long been the cornerstone of Rochester’s raison d’être, resulting in healthcare dominating the city’s economy. For generations, the Mayo Clinic has been the preeminent healthcare powerhouse, each year drawing more than two million patients from across the globe. These patients and their families may stay in the city for extended periods of time, resulting in an influx of spending on accommodations, dining, and entertainment. The community has posted steady growth in traveler spending over the last decade (the only exception being during the COVID-19 pandemic), contributing to revenue growth for state and local economies. In addition, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester now employs over 41,000 people.

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

As a result, the city’s dining, hospitality, and entertainment segments continue to be robust. What’s more, the expansion of the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester demonstrates how the city has evolved to become the premier Midwest destination for conventions, trade shows, and other events. Additional industries driving Rochester’s growth and innovation include medical technology, agribusiness/food, tourism, and information technology, to name a few. When it comes to technology, Rochester is emerging as a national center of life sciences industries, covering biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare research. The region is teeming with the critical ingredients to make it to the top tier of technology communities, thanks to high-quality university research that is involved with industrial efforts and increased early-stage venture capital for technology endeavors.

And thanks to IBM, which established a presence in Rochester in 1956, the information technology (IT) industry is also a significant contributor to the local economy. The IBM Rochester site continues to be a leader in software and hardware development and IT services innovation. Manufacturing also plays an important and strategic role in the region’s economy. It supports a broad range of careers, from precision assembly and engineering to food production and industrial fabrication. From metal fabrication to food to medical segments, manufacturing employs over 9,000 people in the Rochester region, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, accounting for about 6.6% of total employment in the Rochester area. Thanks in part to the close proximity to the world-renowned Mayo Clinic and its extensive network of suppliers, Rochester boasts a strong medical- related manufacturing presence in the region. From hospital and surgical equipment to medical devices, the advanced medical manufacturing industry in the region supports Rochester’s healthcare delivery and research, as well as its clinical innovation.

14 ROCHESTER AREA COMMUNITY GUIDE & CHAMBER DIRECTORY

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

Metal fabrication is another key component of Rochester’s manufacturing footprint. Regional companies focus on fabricated metal products, engineered components, and precision machining – all of which serve sectors from heavy equipment to industrial products. The growth of fabricated metal production in

the Rochester area means a greater demand for skilled production and assembly roles and significant support for the local economy. Situated in Southern Minnesota, a region with a strong agricultural base, Rochester also has a robust agricultural industry. According to the 2022 Census of Agriculture, there are 1,102 farms that call Olmsted County home.

History of Rochester

Photos provided by History Center of Olmsted County

For more than two hundred years, the Rochester area was one of the busiest trade routes in the area. Eventually, a railroad stop was established and a town emerged and grew. In 1883, a historic tornado swept through the region, essentially destroying the early city of Rochester. Dr. William Worrall Mayo, who was serving as the city mayor and also ran a small medical practice in the area, recruited the Sisters of Saint Francis to help him care for the many people who were seriously wounded by the tornado. A few years later, in 1889, the Sisters of Saint Francis partnered with Dr. Mayo to build the region’s first hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital. Dr. Mayo’s sons, William J. Mayo and Charles H. Mayo, served as the physicians while the Sisters embraced the role of nurses and administrators. Fast forward nearly 134 years and today, this quaint “hospital in a cornfield” has become the Mayo Clinic – one of the most renowned healthcare facilities in the world, employing more than 76,000 people and over 66,000 allied health staff as of 2022. Often referred to as “Med City,” today, Rochester is the third largest city in Minnesota and is celebrated globally for its indelible mark on the healthcare industry.

HISTORY

Since its incorporation in 1858, Rochester has been home to tremendous growth and innovation whether it be in healthcare, technology, or the many diverse industries that call our city home. Just as it has throughout its storied history, Rochester will continue to create history for generations to come.

In addition to making a name for itself within the medical community, Rochester also is a tech hub, thanks in part to IBM’s presence in the city since 1956. Since its establishment in Rochester, the IBM facility has been at the center of developing systems hardware, firmware, and software as well as key contributors in the delivery of some of the world’s fastest systems, chips, Quantum computing, patents, and IBM’s Cloud strategy. Rochester certainly has a lot to be proud of across a myriad of industries, including the communications industry as the city is home to the Rochester Post-Bulletin, one of the oldest newspapers in Minnesota. The newspaper can track its heritage to the Rochester City Post, a newspaper established in 1859, a year after Minnesota’s statehood was established. Over its long-standing history, the newspaper has covered everything from the growth of Rochester to news of the Civil War to the Mayo family’s impact on the community.

It should come as no surprise that quality healthcare is the core of the Rochester community. In fact, Rochester is considered by many to be synonymous with “exceptional healthcare.” Founded in Rochester, Minnesota, more than 160 years ago, Mayo Clinic is the largest integrated, not-for-profit medical group practice in the world.
