We’re Excited to Be Here! We want to take the opportunity in this
newsletter to officially announce that we’ve finally moved our operations to our new home! For some time now, we’ve been working to get settled into our new building one step at a time. If you follow us on Facebook, you’ve probably seen the pictures we’ve posted of our new building and the preparations that have gone into it to ensure it’s ready for our team and our clients. When we realized we needed to move, we began to think about where our team would be the most beneficial. That’s when we started looking at Trenton. All of us are excited and happy to be a part of the community here. We look forward to continuing to support not just the people of Trenton but everyone throughout New Jersey. Our new location allows us to be more involved with the people, attend community meetings more easily, and have the space we need to serve our clients better. By taking this step, we’re allowing ourselves to grow, and that, in turn, helps our clients.

WISHING IRMA RINZ THE BEST IN THIS NEW CHAPTER Thank You for a Spectacular 10 Years We want to take the time this month to wish one of our amazing paralegals the best of luck as she moves to new opportunities in her life. Irma Rinz has been working with us for the past 10 years, and while we’re sad to see her go, all of us are thrilled to cheer her on as she takes this next step in her life. With us, Irma focused on pension and Social Security matters. While she is taking this next step in her life, we want to reassure our readers that, should you face any problems, you are welcome to contact the office to speak to Sam Gaylord, Tanya Phillips, or Janis Eisl. Irma found her work very rewarding, but it was an area of law she’d never thought about. “I first started with the law firm as a legal secretary,” Irma says. “I didn’t know much about pensions or Social Security, but Sam, Rose, and everyone else taught me everything I know. Being part of the Gaylord Popp team has been a great learning experience. They held my hand until I felt comfortable on my own. I owe so much to them for that.” Irma is taking up an office manager/admin role at an engineering firm, which will benefit her greatly. In this next chapter in her life, Irma is focused on spending quality time with her family. “My husband is a corrections officer, and that takes up a lot of his time,” she explains. “With this new position, I’m going to be able to spend more time with my son. The three of us will also have more time to go on adventures and travel.” Leaving Gaylord Popp is bittersweet, but Irma is filled with gratitude for everything she’s learned. “I’m grateful for the opportunities Sam and his team have given me. Sam has been like a second dad to me; he saw me buy my first house, get married, and have a child. He’s always been so great with everything going on in my life and supporting me through it. Sam is an inspiring person. He puts in so much hard work for his clients and all of the people who work with him. Gaylord Popp has been home for the past 10 years, and I’ll never forget it.”
STAYING CONNECTED HOWTO KEEPYOUR FAMILY CLOSE IN A BUSYWORLD
If you feel like you’ve hardly seen your kids since the school year started, you’re not alone. Americans are way too busy — from childhood onward, we’re always running hither and thither, packing in as many after-school activities, work-related meetings, and social engagements as possible. It’s a problem so pervasive that it has a name: time scarcity. Families feel time scarcity keenly after school starts in September, when children’s schedules explode with engagements. But all hope for close ties isn’t lost; there are ways to stay connected with your spouse and kids, even in an increasingly busy world. Here are some ideas from counselors, teachers, and psychologists who claim to have mastered the art. REMEMBERYOUR RITUALS Rituals make up the backbone of individual families and society at large. Most people wouldn’t dream of abandoning their holiday traditions, so why forgo the smaller rituals that bring families together? Whether it’s eating dinner at the same table each evening, watching a movie together every Thursday night, or going on a monthly getaway, make sure these traditions aren’t canceled. If your family doesn’t have many rituals, a great way to connect is to start some. MAKE EVERY MOMENT COUNT As cliche as it sounds, when you don’t have much time together, it’s crucial to be present for every minute of it. If you have a rare half-hour at home with one of your kids, make a point to spend it in the same room and try to start a conversation. If you squeeze in a romantic dinner with your spouse, turn off your phones before the food comes. Listening to each other without distractions will strengthen your relationship. HUG IT OUT Physical contact is vital for closeness. When you get the chance, hug your kids, hold hands with your spouse, and do physical activities as a family, like hiking, biking, or even playing group sports. It’s been scientifically proven that physical closeness leads to emotional closeness, so if you’re low on time, take advantage of that shortcut!

HONORING BRYCE CHASE
past chairman of the Mercer County Indigent Committee (the predecessor to the Public Defender’s Office) and is the former chairman of the Mercer County Fee Arbitration Committee. He prosecuted a Hopewell Township Municipal Court, served in the U. S. Marine Corp. from 1958–66, and is admitted to the Bar of the State of New Jersey. Bryce is also closely associated with the community in and surrounding Princeton University. Throughout his high school and undergrad education, Bryce attended both Princeton High School and Princeton University, where he received his bachelor degree. Although he no longer attends these schools as a student, he is still very much a part of this community and culture. Since 1971, Bryce has volunteered as a coach for the Princeton University lacrosse team. GO TIGERS! Earlier this year, the MCBA recognized Bryce’s hard work and dedication once more. In May, Bryce received an honorary award, which is given to Bar members

His practice is focused on workers’ compensation — he is a certified workers’ compensation attorney — and Municipal Court. He was initially a certified trial attorney and represented plaintiffs for a variety of claims including automobile injury and slip and fall claims. In 2008, Bryce was awarded Professional Lawyer of the Year by the Mercer County Bar Association (MCBA). He is also a HAVE A LAUGH
who have 50 or more years committed to the Bar of the State of New Jersey. This honor represents everything he has done over the years.
What do you do when apples are in season but you don’t have time to make a pie?You opt for a crisp, of course. CLASSIC APPLE CRISP Bryce S. Chase Inspired by Food Network
INGREDIENTS
Topping: • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup brown sugar • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp salt
Filling • 5 lbs Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and chopped • 1/4 cup pecans, finely chopped • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
• 2 tbsp maple syrup • 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 6 tbsp chilled butter, cut into pieces • 1/4 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. In a mixing bowl, mix all filling ingredients together.Transfer to individual serving ramekins. 3. In a different mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the topping. Mix in butter until it forms lumps roughly the size of a pea, then stir in pecans. Sprinkle topping over filling. 4. Bake for 35–40 minutes, let stand for 10 minutes, and serve.

It doesn’t always take a master architect to create a breathtaking home. Some homeowners have shunned suburban domiciles and, with a little artistic vision and a lot of determination, built homes that capture their identities. Quirky, meticulously constructed, and always unique, here are a few of the world’s wackiest homes designed, and sometimes built, by their owners. When someone says they live on the water, they probably don’t mean they actually live on the water. But for artists Wayne Adams and Catherine King, the statement is literal. Freedom Cove, their remote, magenta-green island home, floats in Clayoquot Sound near Vancouver Island. They started building it from old, interlocking steel docks in 1991, and now it FREEDOM COVE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
BAT CASA, SAN MIGUEL, MEXICO The best word to describe this home is probably “anatomical.” That’s certainly the aesthetic movie set designer and Bat Casa resident Steve Rood was going for. The staircase looks like human vertebrae, skeletal hands act as towel hooks in the bathroom, and tendril-like fixtures surround the living room couch. Perhaps the most out-of-character addition to the house is a large mural of the bat symbol painted on the garage door, which is the origin of the property’s name. HOBBIT HOUSE, INVERNESS-SHIRE, SCOTLAND Surprisingly, Stuart Grant’s cozy forest cottage was not inspired by the hobbit holes of “Lord of the Rings.” In fact,
Grant built it over 15 years before the first movie was released. Still, it’s hard not to imagine some magical creature taking up residence in this house, which appears to be an extension of the forest itself. Gnarled tree trunks frame a circular door, moss coats the roof, and ivy covers most of the walls, all belying a cozy interior fit for many a hobbit meal or dwarf song. These homes may not be for everyone, but that’s kind of the point. Each of these homes was built by a specific resident, for a specific resident. Still, you can’t help but be impressed by the determination of their owners to make something truly one of a kind.
