The small, meandering highway threads its way through a 1.5-million-acre forest preserve. The road twists and turns and climbs steadily through Rocky Mountain passes, thickening pines, and dropping temperatures. Depending upon the time of year, the a/c is either turned off or the heat is turned on. The car windows are lowered to get a clearer glimpse of the silvery strand of river that flows alongside, to feel cold, crisp air on the skin, and to breathe in the growing excitement of what lies beyond the next bend.
