Skip Auld, Anne Arundel County Public Library Chief Executive Officer

Libraries Respond to Community Needs As we approach the two-year mark of living in a global pandemic, I can’t help but feel immense pride in and gratitude for the roughly 450 Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) employees. These hardworking individuals (my colleagues!) have exhibited an extraordinary amount of creativity, flexibility, compassion and gumption over the last 24 months. Responding to the needs in their communities, library staff have built countless new services like curbside pickup, virtual programs and Chromebook borrowing. In addition to the work we are known for, specifically loaning out books, movies and music, AACPL

Board of Trustees OFFICERS William A. Shorter, Jr. Chairman Joyce C. Miller 1st Vice Chairman J. Robert Sapp III 2nd Vice Chairman Laura J. Ellis Secretary Barbara D. staff have helped people navigate the safety net benefits process and get jobs. Library employees have given away food, books, diapers and wipes. In fact, our Discoveries Library location opened a community pantry in July for baby and menstrual products and have served over 1,300 people already. What I am perhaps most proud of is the life-saving public health work we have done over the last year. As of February 1, we have given out nearly 65,000 COVID-19 test kits and 250,000 high-quality masks and held nearly 65 vaccine clinics. Some may argue that it’s not the responsibility of the library to do this type of work. I would vehemently disagree. Libraries are trusted community resources that are vital to the health and wellbeing of a community. Residents know that when they come to the library, they can feel confident in what they discover and in what they receive whether that’s a COVID-19 test kit, training on how to build a resume or kindergarten readiness classes. Best of all, we proudly serve everyone! As we move into our 101st year of service, I’d like to thank our current and past employees for their compassionate dedication to the people of Anne Arundel County. Together, we remain committed to helping build a welcoming, resilient community where all can realize life to its fullest potential.
