lighting design, Bram Stoker’s classic was expertly realised for us, leaving out none of the gore of the original text. Similarly, Patrick Craig of Grenville should be commended for his directing and acting in a stunning version of Equus . Using an eerie sound design and metal wire horse head, this deftly put together piece left the audience stunned. Peter Bristow, in taking the lead role, gave a performance of exhilarating intensity. Another student to prove himself a skilled theatre-maker on the night was Fred Robb. Adapting and acting in Raleigh’s Caucasian Chalk Circle , Fred’s piece was notable for its skilful use of puppetry and fluid transitions. Fred’s grasp of stagecraft and the potential effectiveness and impact of work for an audience is impressive for one so young. Of the other shows, Spenser’s 39 Steps , put together by

Chyaro Hylton and Frank Kauer, was a real hoot. Chyaro, with his expert comic timing, showed us that he would be one to watch for the future as he bagged the Best Actor gong. Also, Sidney’s Our Country’s Good saw an hilarious comic performance from Johnny Stone, deftly staged with real authenticity by Zak Asgard, and Gus Vaughan Williams had the audience in stitches as he strutted his stuff in Marlowe’s History Boys . All in all, it was a brilliant evening in which the boys showcased their considerable all-round talent. It was a real pleasure to be asked to adjudicate the evening and it will certainly stay in my memory for a long while.
