The Alleynian 704 2016

P atricia Heaton retired from active duty at the end of the Lent term 2016. Since Easter 2008, she was the Staff Nurse in the Medical Centre and managed the team of nurses there with a calm and seasoned efficiency. She was a very able practitioner and the pastoral and personal welfare of boys of all ages was always her top priority. Patricia, or Tricia as she preferred into previously uncharted territory. His use of materials, particularly paint, in their raw and elemental state brought a sense of creative alchemy to our studios, framing what would become the catalyst towards giving Art greater academic status among his students. One year in, overseeing the Critical & Contextual A-level course while studying part-time for his own Philosophy MA (some folk will do anything to avoid being a Year 9 Form Tutor), was to Harrison an insufficient challenge, only remedied by co-editing two bumper editions of The Alleynian . Broadening its editorial scope while solidifying its design credentials – it remains in a similar vogue – he created a platform for his disciples to air their creative disciplines. Seeking a role connected to a source of The Alleynian ’s editorial, a sideways move to Union President was inevitable, overseeing the birth of the Ultimate Frisbee Society, and with it bringing the Union into the heart of the department. would be an asset to Dulwich. We snapped him up on a two-term contract. During this short time he excelled within the Physical Education department but the lack of a full-time position resulted in him leaving to take up the post of Head of Football at UCS Hampstead. The following year, however, we successfully managed to tempt him back to Dulwich (we now like to refer to his time at UCS as ‘an early sabbatical’) where he took over as

She leaves now after eight years of loyal service to be closer to family in the West Country and we wish her all the very best for the future. Harrison’s reflective, unruffled style became the well-pointed mortar between the multi-faceted building blocks of the Union’s clubs and societies, and when the College made plans for a new architectural statement via The Laboratory, Harrison’s ability to intelligently synthesise the scientific heart of the creative process was key to securing an Art Soc team to liaise with Conrad Shawcross for a permanent sculptural commission. So wise and yet so young, Harrison has uniquely bridged the classroom environment to his own creative output; leading on the introduction of the Pre-U Art course here over this past year, and also back over the other side of the fence studying for an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds. The timing is so clearly right for Harrison as he leaves us now to complete what all artists find the toughest of all educational challenges: to continue life as a full- time artist. The cycle is now complete; we wish him every future success. Master in Charge of Football in 2012. I have great admiration for Arthur’s educational values, his inclusivity and his vision of how sport should be played. It is impossible to measure, but I know just how many of the staff at Dulwich have benefitted from his time with us. He is well read and is always exploring different ideas and concepts – he has certainly

A cting under thinly veiled 2011, having successfully applied for a job (the post of Head of History of Art) that didn’t actually exist. The smell of opportunity beckoned, however, and although HoD status would have to wait, Harrison agreed to stay, dividing his time between hands-on studio practice and pondering its contextual heartland via the written word. Harrison brought a youthful brio to the department; sharp witted, super bright and with some much-needed fresh ideas to propel a particularly lethargic Year 13 cohort cognitive dissonance, Harrison Pearce arrived at the College in
