The Alleynian Politics Debate

In an academic year that began with the aftermath of the UK election, saw the victory of Jeremy Corbyn in the race to be Labour leader, the increasing likelihood of Donald Trump’s nomination as Republican Party presidential candidate, and the lead-up to the EU referendum, it feels like politics is being talked about at Dulwich more than ever. And, with the rise of social media, the way students engage with each other in political discussion is also changing. To reflect on this, The Alleynian ’s Charlie Scoular (Year 13) gathered together other boys from his year who hold differing positions on the political spectrum to record what frequently goes on unreported – informed political discussion and debate. Many topics were discussed and arguments chewed over. Here we reproduce three of the issues that proved most contentious: whether to leave the EU, the rights and wrongs of renewing Trident, and the future of politics itself. Chaired by Sam Cleary, the discussion featured contributions from Year 13 members Luca Iovino, Tohid Ismail, Tom Gardner, Justin Kugel, Joe Riordan, James Todd and TomWhite.
