Responses to Eldfell, Heimaey, Iceland
In July 2015, fifteen boys from Years 7, 8 and 9 followed in the footsteps of the Vikings, venturing to the land of ice and fire. Of all the glacial, hydrologic, ecologic, mythic and gastronomic wonders they encountered, Eldfell, a crater born only in 1973 on the island of Heimaey off Iceland’s southern shore, has to have been the most evocative. The cinder cone was atmospheric in the mist, the alien landscape almost shape-shifting. These are their responses to the experience. Maggie Jarman
