Spruce Interiors is a full-service interior design studio. Couch and Dyleski begin with how some- one wants to live in a mountain house, not with a formula for how one should look. Favorite colors and personal style come up. The larger question comes first. “What we really want to know is how do you want to feel in the space?” “How do you envision yourself on a perfect day in this room?” “ And yes, for these two, the answer may occa- sionally be mahjong. But it still decides what the room needs to support before they decide what goes in it. “Spaces are living... they can change all the time,” Dyleski said.
Spruce Interiors also functions as a showroom and retail store. Lamps, accessories and other pieces for the home fill the studio, giving visitors plenty to browse even when they are not sitting down to talk about a design project. That same preference for rooms that are meant to be used carries easily into Mountain Mahj Collective.
“Interior design and mahjong,” Couch said. “Of course it does. It’s an experience.” Couch and Dyleski keep the play re- laxed. They guide when someone needs help. Regulars encourage newer players. Then the game takes over again. Phones go down. The tiles move, and another hand begins.
