2224 Upper Divide Road sits inside the gates of Highlands Falls Country Club in Highlands, North Carolina, more than 4,000 feet up on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Step inside, and the great room’s wall of glass takes in the mountain, with the Cashiers Valley opening between the ridges beyond it. Summit Architecture designed a full renovation and expansion, which Brett Murphy of Arrowood Construction built. The exterior is hand-cut native granite, Millboard siding, Marvin windows and a DaVinci slate roof with standing-seam dormers. At dusk, Hubbardton Forge sconces in slate and metal shadowboxes light the walk to the door. Guests find the walnut bar just past the foyer, with its hammered copper sink and Sub-Zero dual-climate wine refrigeration, before they find the coat closet. In the great room, timber beams carry the vaulted ceiling over a 28-foot fireplace of native granite with a steel centerpiece. Roaming security patrols the club, which is less than two miles from Main Street and nine from Cashiers. On the 15th hole, the green sits on a rock ledge nearly beneath a 100-foot waterfall on the Cullasaja River. Membership is optional and extends one generation above and one below the primary member. The house is set up for that, with two primary suites, one per level. THE DOOR OPENS ON Whiteside Mountain.
