Canterbury School New Milford, CT

The Kiski School is an all boys boarding school serving grades 9-12. Kiski is located 30 minutes east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1888, Kiski has a long history and a rich heritage. The educational philosophy of Kiski’s founder, Dr. Andrew Wilson, was influenced by the preceptorial system he experienced as a student at Princeton University. Today, this teaching method – based on small classes and individualized tutorial sessions – remains the defining element of the Kiski experience. Kiski’s teachers are experts in the education of boys. They understand their unique learning needs, know how to reach and teach young men, and, most importantly, they love what they do. Kiski provides a traditional college preparatory curriculum enhanced by diverse offerings in the arts and athletics. At Kiski, we celebrate the diversity of talents in our community and provide ways for each boy to express his ideas, opinions, and personality. Kiski recognizes the academic classroom does not provide all students with the best means to express themselves, so there are other programs to support them. In the art studio, students paint, sketch, sculpt, and create other forms of artwork. The drama program produces three major performances each year, and brief sketches on special occasions. The music program provides opportunities for Kiski boys to develop and share their talent. The instrumental music program includes a jazz and symphonic ensemble and students can receive individual study with private instructors. Two singing

Canterbury School is a coeducational boarding and day school enrolling 360 students in a college preparatory program for grades 9-12. In addition to its strong academic program, the school is known for the beauty of its location, a true dedication to spiritual growth, and competitive sports programs for both boys and girls. Canterbury was founded in 1915 by prominent lay Catholics. One of the founders, Dr. Nelson Hume, was honored by Pope Pius XI for his outstanding work in education. Today the Canterbury student body is a diverse mix of both Catholics and non-Catholics from 16 countries and 21 states. Canterbury’s buildings, set on 150 acres, are a rich architectural mix of traditional and modern. The campus is about 80 miles from New York City in an area of natural beauty near the Housatonic River

and the Appalachian Trail. The Chapel of Our Lady is both the physical center and the spiritual heart of the campus. The large, newly renovated and expanded Robert Markey Steele Hall has a dining room, a student center, two computer labs, a library, a 100-seat lecture room, and the Steers Admission Center. Next door, Nelson Hume Hall has classrooms, science labs, a 400-seat auditorium, and the Theater Department’s “green room.” The sports facilities

ensembles, the Glee Club and the Double Quartet, tackle music from classic Americana to contemporary a cappella. Kiski athletics provides boys with another way to express their individuality outside of the classroom. Kiski has 23 athletic teams and participates in over 300 athletic contests, providing a variety of athletic challenges to explore. At Kiski, young men learn about themselves through athletic participation. Kiski

include ten playing fields including one new multi-purpose turf field, three baseball diamonds, softball field, eight tennis courts, a track, an aquatic center, and a hockey arena. The athletic facility houses three basketball courts, five international squash courts, locker rooms, a state of the art weight and fitness room, a wrestling room, as well as space for aerobics and dance. There are eight student dormitories, which, like the classroom buildings, have wireless Internet access. Canterbury School takes pride in the breadth and depth of its course options. Few boarding schools of Canterbury’s size offer as many AP classes (19). Canterbury is among the very few offering AP courses in World History, Drawing, and Music Theory. The school also offers four years of Latin. Canterbury’s sports program is extensive, the athletic facilities are substantial, and the coaches are dedicated. All students participate in athletics. Three team levels – Varsity, Junior Varsity, and recreational— are fielded in most sports to accommodate players of varying skills, ages, and size. Canterbury offers nineteen Varsity sports and is competitive amongst other New England boarding schools. www.cbury.org www.facebook.com/canterbury.admission

values the athletic experience and the benefits it produces for students. The concepts of teamwork, unselfishness, hard work toward a common goal, and perseverance are invaluable lessons that graduates carry with them for the rest of their lives. Vibrant. Positive. Enriching. Supportive. This is the foundation of the Kiski experience. Add another word: friendship. The friends made at Kiski are friends you’ll keep for life. Friends are made through shared experiences of excellent academic preparation inside the classroom and engaging activities, events, and programs outside the classroom. These shared experiences help foster personal growth, hone leadership skills, and prepare boys for the future and for life. Visit at www.kiski.org
